Warning for all hostgator users while they are in migration (your site is more vulnerable)

Hi

Just a word of warning if you are using hostgator.

Our site was hacked into last night and as well as getting access to all of our files and posting them on torrents and forums the hackers blocked us out of our own site (we are still locked out) and uploaded a "site is under maintenance' sign instead. We can't get access to our cpanels, files or anything.

Although they were helpful, the Hostgator agent said that it was because of the migration that they are doing at the moment that was making the sites more vulnerable and once it was sorted it would be much more secure. (His actual words when I said how concerned I was that my site was compromised were "This is actually because of our migration so this is our doing at the moment. You should not have this happen again after this time")

That is not much consolation to me at the moment and the agent said I could submit a ticket for compensation.

I just wanted to warn fellow Hostgator users as I had received a message about the migration 8 days ago and it still wasn't done until today. They didn't say anything about the site being at risk.

This is the email I received 8 days ago:

      Hello,

Please read this email urgently and in its entirety as it contains very important information regarding your HostGator account on hostgator.com.

Your account is being upgraded onto brand new, more powerful hardware which will include the latest versions of cPanel and CentOS.
We plan to facilitate this upgrade as quickly and seamlessly as possible. Ensuring your total satisfaction with this maintenance is our primary objective. We will keep you updated via e-mail throughout. The upgrade process itself will result in an exact copy of your account being moved to new hardware and will ensure that the freshest possible up to the minute data is retained.

Once your data switchover is complete we will begin diverting all traffic to your new server so that you do not miss any traffic or experience connectivity problems. Please be aware that there may be minimal amounts of downtime, however we will do everything within our power to ensure a smooth transition. Please note, if you are currently using custom name servers, this process may require a change of IP addresses.

We will contact you within 48 hours, once the upgrade process has started.

*** Please expect a followup notice which will indicate the specific details required to update your DNS/Nameservers. ***

*** At this time, there is no action required on your part. **

All the while this is going on apparently it is leaving our sites at risk as mentioned by the agent quoted in the chat transcript above.

I have just contacted Hostgator again as they said my site would be migrated within an hour or two.

5 hours later and it is still not done.

Apparently they have a huge backlog and a number of issues to deal with.

It might be a bigger problem than they are acknowledging. Might be an idea to set up some mirror sites on other servers if you have them.

I thought it best to warn you as I don't want anybody else to be in a similar situation to us right now

Hope they get your migration across to the new servers sooner rather than later.

This used to be a great company years ago. Then it got bought up. Sadly, it is not the same company. People do not get the same level of service. Wish it were not so. Frankly, I use to be a power reseller, but I can no longer recommend their service to any one.

      It's sad really.

I've used them for at least 6 years - probably longer....but my confidence in their service has been knocked (although I have nothing but praise for their support chat helpline).

My site has still not migrated (its been down for almost 24 hours) so I am losing
Sales and my clients can't download the products they have paid for. Not to mention the fact that my site has had an open door for thieves to walk in and take it upon themselves to share my products on forums and torrents.

I have the same problem. My client's website goes to another site that says down for maintenance. Hostgator told me it was a migration issue where they are pointing my dedicated IP to a different server. No ETA on fixing the issue seems odd to me. They must have either been hacked or really screwed up the migration.

I just hope they are being honest with the situation. This is a serious issue with my client's income each hour the site is down.

I definitely think the situation is worse than they are letting on - my time for migration is well overdue.

The hostgator agent was very candid when he said the issue was with them. I am looking for compensation.

      Thanks for sharing your experience.

No, you'll mostly find these issues with companies that get bought up by EIG. They own 99% of the "unlimited" everything web hosting companies and operate under 50+ different brands. When you get pissed at Fatcow & jump ship to BlueHost, technically you, the customer has never left.

      I never knew that!!

      Thanks for the link.

It's time for me to look for an alternative host.

No problem, imagine that. Not notifying "all" customers is class EIG. (EIG is who bought out HostGator) You'll see more and more threads pop up about performance and related issues in the near future, mark my words. A few of us called this months ago when they first started talking about a buyout but no one wanted to believe it.

HostGator = BlueHost = JustHost = HostMonster = HostNine = 50+ other "unlimited" "top-10" hosts that are owned & operated by the same parent company. Do your research first.

Is there any way to tell for sure whether a particular hosting company is owned by EIG?

Pretty much 99% of the hosts that sell "unlimited" and if they're on any of the fake affiliate "review" sites. They're only there because they're the top paying affiliates. Why else would EVERY single web hosting review site have the same exact ones listed... I challenge anyone to find a review site that isn't littered with affiliate links for any of the mainstream hosts...bet you wont.

I currently run on a dedicated server. I think I pay about $220 a month.

I've tried other companies in the past with bad results, but then hostgator is now no better then they were.

had a site hacked, it took them over 18 hrs to fix it. now the site is down again, the hackers must of left a time bomb, its been 24 hrs and they claim there is no backup for the site even though I get a daily email stating that the backup has been completed.

looks like I'm gonna have to rebuild the whole site from scratch again.

Hmm, doesn't sound good. Although, I'm not sure what their backup policy is for virtual & dedicated servers. Typically, even a managed server is the server itself, not technically the website.

I'd also recommend taking your own backups and keeping them off site.

What type of site(s) are you running on this dedicated server & are you sure you need a dedicated server? Is it a true, server grade processor such as a Xeon proc or is it a desktop type processor such as an "i" series?

That's probably because you don't understand how to use a simple chat box lol. It takes you to search results in case your question has already been answered, and at the bottom of the box you have the option to continue to chat.

As of this writing, I am still talking with the support guy for 1:43:04 to be exact! He even logged in the wrong cpanel and I really don't know how that happened. Cutting costs?
