Any other freelancers out there? Tips and Advice

Hello all,

I have recently taken the plunge into freelancing and going it alone. I have been doing it for a month or so whereas previously I was with an agency for 5 years. I moved on because I wanted to work my own hours blah blah blah.

I am involved in SEO and Internet Marketing outside of my freelancing with a few sites and blogs I own myself and run them when I have the time.

Focusing on freelancing I'd love some help and tips from you guys as there may be a few freelancers out there as to where they find work at a regular pace? I have signed up and use Freelancer, Elance, Guru and a few others as well as scrolling through some local job boards for freelance work. Is there anything else I should be doing/looking?

I just need to start networking and getting more jobs in turn boosting my reputation. Any freelancing advice at all would be great?

    Hey man, good to see someone else working for what they want. I've just recently got back into fiverr.com you can freelance from there, it's a great way to make extra income I been doing it for about 2 years now.

    Fiverr should only be used to deliver low-cost entry-point services, with a sales funnel approach that can lead buyers to purchase more expensive services from you later.

    I don't do freelancing anymore, but I did for nearly a decade.

    I never did use the typical sites that most people use: odesk, elance, etc.

    Instead, I built my own website, provided samples on my website of the work that I did, then used article marketing to reach the folks who were most likely to buy my services. I also offered a live phone number for people to call, if they needed to ask questions or find additional information.

    I made some seriously good money as a freelancer for as long as I did it. I only got out of it, because I wanted to create and sell products for myself instead of for others.

    When my time came, I made the leap. And, I have never regretted making the transition.

    Hey Stuart,

    I've been freelancing as a copywriter for the last 6 years or so, and became profitable enough to open an entire ad agency based on that.

    And without fail, the single most important thing I ever did for my freelance career was to SEPARATE myself from all the rest.

    I decided to do that by offering up an incredible amount of valuable content FIRST... before even trying to sell or monetize anything.

    In other words, every single time I got an email/skype/phone call... I didn't think about any of my needs first.

    I put the needs of my clients before me. I tried to help them the best I could, with what they were trying to do.

    And if I felt I wasn't the best person for the job, I'd tell them that too.

    But the entire time I've been freelancing, I've been successful purely from trying to help out my prospects in the best way possible... before even getting anything in return.

    I'd do it by email, by content on my site, by message boards/forums, etc.... and offering up valuable free content got me more writing gigs than spending thousands on Adwords.

    So, that would be my advice to you... try to find a way to separate yourself from all the others... and do it by offering up incredible and valuable content that HELPS your market.

    Do THAT and you'll soon get people coming to you, instead of you having to chase them.

    Check out the book by Seth Godin called Tribes... it will give you some insight on how to build a loyal following.

    But these days, you just have to stand out and be different... and the best way I've been able to do that is by offering help first, getting hired second.

    This has allowed me to even turn away jobs, only to find that the prospects were willing to wait for me, just because they wanted me and no one else to help them.

    Over deliver value, in anything you do, and i promise... that won't steer you wrong.

    I have been freelancing for a little over 6 years. The best advice I can give you is provide the best service you can.

    Even if it means tossing in something extra from time to time, adding an extra option to a design or anything that will help a client understand that they are important to you and your business.

    When you treat ALL clients like celebrities, over time you will have more business than you know what to do with because they will be comfortable referring you to other people they know.

      Find a local association you enjoy being around and become their go-to guy. Sponsor the association so that you can attend every meeting. Usually you'll get to get up on stage at their monthly meetings and give a 60-second shpeal about your biz. Do some free work for the assn like a redo of their website or some seo or something and you'll be amazed how easy it is to infiltrate and get all the leads you want. Association attendees will pay much more than a fiverr gig, that's for sure.

    I work on Fiverr. It's gotten to the point where I more or less have to ask for "Extra" upsells, but it does work. Unfortunately it's against the rules to move clients off Fiverr, but most online freelancing services are like that.

    Thanks for all the advice guys - I'm going to take it all on board. The little time that I have been freelancing and the jobs I have been doing I have been doing at a cut price of what I intend on charging in the future as well as offering more.
