Need help from someone who has launched a software product

I am looking to make a software product, or rather commission one to be made. The affiliate thing just doesn't seem to fit for me (tired of making money for other people with little return).

Anyway, It will be a simple program, but have a wide variety of benefits for just about anyone who uses a computer. My question is how I should go about marketing a software program. The program itself will be inexpensive, so I don't know how many affiliates would like to spend their time or money to promote it.

Its also not really something someone would search for. Its more of a "Oh my God, how come no one has thought of this before" products. I have run the idea itself by a good sized group of my friends who all seemed enthusiastic about the concept. Some even going so far as to say they would buy it in a heartbeat.

This is what I specialize in. I don't always have a lot of time, but if you want to tell me a little bit about your plan, I will be happy to give you a few points of advice. I also have a full time staff of programmers if you are looking to get some work done. Just let me know.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

The easiest way to approach this is usually to pick a specific group of people that you want to target and identify which benefits apply specifically to them, then market it as something to help those people. Test and tweek your sales process until you think it's pretty good (i.e people are actually buying the product) and then select another group of people and market it with them in mind - keep doing this with as many niche groups as you can think of.

The problem with a generic tool is that it's easy to end up marketing too generally and getting low conversions.
