Name gets misspelled - how to 'train' searchers?

7 replies
Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to handle this situation. I just discovered that 3600 people are searching for something on my website by misspelling the name! I had anticipated the misspelling and got extra domains (that are misspelled and they are forwarding to the real domain). Unfortunately there are more misspelled searches from seekers, which I hadn't anticipated.

Would you get those domains as well or would you "optimize" your site somehow with the misspelled words? But if so, how do you optimize a page with a misspelled name so Google can pick it up? (I checked Google now and the misspelled is nowhere near leading to my page, which means I lose at least 3600 monthly visitors from this misspelling alone.

What would you do?

    Just misspell it on your own site by creating content around the misspelling. If you want, find a way to build some content around the fact that people misspell it - of course depending on what the term is. But you can just misspell it too.

    Definitely don't try to train people to spell better or whatever. I'm sure that's not what you meant but just saying. People spell my name and others names wrong on this forum all the time and we're right here in front of their face.

    Thanks

    How about setting up a special section on your About page?

    Simply include a paragraph that basically says:
    My name is Core Freedom, but many people seem to misspell it. Common misspellings include:

    * Are you stupid?
    * Do you spell my name wrong because you are from Oklahoma?
    * If you would put the beer down long enough to form a clear thought, you might not misspell my name.
    * I know they didn't teach how to spell my name yet in the third grade.
    * Spell it with me... M-Y ... N-A-M-E...
    * Wow, do you need glasses? LensCrafters could help you...
    LOL

    I am sure you get the idea...

    I agree with the other suggestions. If you write, create an article on the issues related to misspellings and use yours as an example.
    The About Me page would work just as well.
    You can't "train" searchers because people are from numerous countries and many of them don't know how to spell.

      I used to sell a product that was commonly misspelled and I handled it as other suggested here. I wrote a post listing all the common misspellings and said something like...xyz, zz, yzx, xx, however you spell it is a terrific product that can etc.

    I think your numbers may be a little overstated,
    What Im saying is you do not lose 3600 visitors you lose a potential of 3600 visitors.

    I used to worry about getting misspelled domains and I still do on very common words but not as much.
    Now if I was in niche where the competition was under 5,000 and I had 3600 people who misspelt the name, then I would be sick to my stomach.

      Yes, totally noted and agreed. Unfortunately I AM the product, it's my personal name that gets misspelled and mispronounced constantly and thankfully I thought of some of the misspellings and own those domains (forwarded), but one so obvious spelling I totally missed. :-) It's all good, the suggestions here are great, will implement today!

      Thank you all. :-)
