So I made a Google plugin...

So a few months ago I had an idea that I wanted to implement for a Chrome plugin.

I ended up developing it, Beta testing it, and so far everything has been going really well.

Now comes the problem. HOW DO I MAKE MONEY OFF OF IT? :p I am still new to Internet entrepreneurship, so I know I should have thought about this before I made it, but you live and learn....

There are apparently 310+ million active chrome users, and my plugin is applicable for a lot of people. I was thinking of running ads on it, but I also don't know what to expect download wise...

Are plugins profitable? Have people gotten a good amount of downloads through it?

    Plugins are very profitable, as far as going about selling, that depends on what market the plugin targeting. If it was a plugin to help internet marketers, WF would be the perfect place to launch it

      Good to know they are profitable

      My niche is really everyone on the internet, however I think I am going to focus on students. Particularly college/university kids.

      Have any advice?

        Lol, I have no advice, I have no idea what you are offering students. Everybody on the internet needs an internet connection, is that what you are offering? If, you are going to ask a question, then ask a question, this isn't a game of Charades

        Fixed that for you.

        One size fits all = one size fits none.

        But to answer your question: you can't. Chrome extensions and themes cannot be sold yet. You will have to convert your extension to an app.

        Nobody is going to be able to give you advice because none of us know what the plugin is, what your advertising budget is, what experience you have in marketing, and so on. If you want help, you have to provide more information.

    Ya sorry. I am VERY new as you can tell lol

    The extensions is like a smart note pad. It gets integrated into the internet and links with certain websites to show notes that you created specifically for that domain.

    A bit hard to explain on paper, but with my Beta I had great reviews.

    Marketing experience is probably a 2 out of 10 haha. I have some experience in SEO as well as cpc and cpm.

    Budget will be around 1k

  • Heya AvusBlue,

    Read more about Pay Per Install (PPI) networks. Some of these PPI networks can allow you to bundle other software products with your plugin as an integrated installer, in order to enable users to optionally install these bundled software products when installing your plugin. You get paid a fixed price each time these bundled software products are installed by users.

    Find PPI networks with software product offers that are laterally related to your plugin and the specific needs of your target users. Of course, go with legitimate PPI networks, because a few may offer software products with spyware or adware or malicious code.

    Interesting idea.

    Make sure you start with a target market, and market towards them.

    Once you've developed a successful campaign marketing to one specific market, start branching out and targeting new groups. I'm not sure how you'd monetize it, but I've heard good things about the Pay Per Install campaigns Marx recommended you check into.

    For the JV section. Do you think it would be helpful to try and link up with someone there if the PPI fails?

    • I think it'd be good to just focus and test one method at a time, so make up your mind -- Test the PPI method or the JV method for now, since you can always do the next thing (or other things) later.

      For the PPI method, it's pretty straightforward --

      • Sign up as a developer with a legitimate PPI network that has good offers laterally relevant to your plugin and the specific needs of your target users (students);

      • Set up a download page in your site for your free plugin where you can collect emails in exchange for your free plugin;

      • Promote your free plugin through free and paid campaigns -- Post your free plugin in popular download sites, implement PPC campaigns that target student demographics in Facebook, do PPM or fixed monthly ad space rentals in heavily trafficked community portals and specialized niche authority sites where your target audience hangs out and so on;

      • Monitor and track the results of your promotional campaigns;

      • Study the things that work and those that don't with your campaigns, then improve your campaigns accordingly; and

      • In order to get repeat business and referral traffic (from your subscribers and viewers) for yourself, establish mutually beneficial relationships with your subscribers (users who gave their emails in exchange for your free plugin) by offering useful, relevant content in your site, in your emails/newsletters, as well as detailed recommendations or reviews or how tos or tutorials or guides for other good free and paid products (yours and/or affiliate products) that can help them with their related needs and problems.
