door hanger marketing

I am beginning a fairly intensive marketing campaign using bags of information hanging on doors to promote insurance and financial services.

Included in the information is a reply card and a postage paid envelope to make it easy for someone to respond.

I'd be interested in thoughts and suggestions on this. I'd also be interested in what kind of response rate you think I should expect.

I'm putting a lot of time and energy into this program.

Insurance is a tough market, Financial also, this approach is a hit or miss approach, I suspect the first thought a prospect might think about is who has been on my property...

I know my neighbors would be checking their security videos to see who you were and if they could get a license plate so they could report your trespassing on their property to the police...

Not to mention that it could be actually dangerous to go door to door, back in the 70s and early 80s this was an easy sell, you could sell anything door to door, but just dropping off a package and hoping to get a reply, the statistics say that you have to approach 400 prospects before you make one sale, I know sounds insane right, but that is what your dealing with here.

You need Qualified prospects, leads, you should go mobile, its the way everything is headed.

Forget door to door its expensive and more than likely you will not get many leads or sales, its just the way things are these days, people are concerned about security and about financial stability in a broker, I would re-evaluate and start over.

If you have already purchased materials, check into placement or combine it with a mobile marketing offer.

    david1975,

Good old "snail mail" with card and a postage paid included
will bring you better results, cheaper and avoiding police
issues like the one mentioned by Tim Franklin.

This system, believe or not, remains effective nowadays.

I have done this with decent sucess with real estate. The challange with this type of marketing is that you will need to be consistent with it as most people won't call you after the first few times...which can be expensive.

    Thanks for the responses.

In regards to people being concerned about security. I must say I really don't understand that concern very well. I'm simply walking up to the door, hanging a bag, and walking away. I'm wearing professional clothes and a namebadge. The phone company leaves new phone books on our doorstep. I don't see it as being any different than that.

I have done mailer programs before with decent success. With mailers and postage paid envelopes, my best results have been .5 % to 1% returns and sometimes no repliers at all. Mail can be expensive as well. But I have had some great sales from direct mail.

I have high hopes I can get better responses with a door to door strategy. I figure that, with mail, the most difficult part is getting someone to open the letter and read the message. I think door to door gives me a much, much higher chance of the homeowner reading the message.

Also, I can include a bit more information and not concern myself with weight and postage.

I went through a lot of trouble setting up a business reply mail account through the post office so I can include reply cards and postage paid envelopes with each bag I hang.

I understand that this tactic may fail, but I've put a lot of energy, work, and hope into it.

I would consider this effort a success if my return rate is higher than direct mail.

Not sure what country OP is from, but it's important to note that laws on this topic vary greatly across the globe. In the US, I believe this kind of activity would be illegal. You need to pay USPS a postage fee to drop ANYTHING off at a person's address (and it has to be in the letterbox). In Australia, on the other hand, it's common practice to do door-to-door sales, and people there are not as uptight about security issues as they are in the US.

I used to consider anything left on my front door as litter and threw it back on the street without looking at it.

Then I grew up and realized I was the one littering. I started just tossing that garbage in my recycling bin instead.

I appreciate the responses but I am so surprised by these statements.

Illegal.....I don't think so......I know people use door hangers to promote Chinese food, Pizza and home services such as yard work, tree removal, kitchen remodel, ect.

I actually like this marketing and have responded to it from time to time. (ordered pizza and called someone to cut the grass)

I'll keep you informed as to the results and let you know if it's a program that works for me.

This forum is very biased to internet marketing and you have to spend some time here really figuring out who knows what they are talking about.

Door to door is by far the one of the best marketing strategies for any face to face business, before starting my own marketing company I sold satellite and security systems door to door for 5 summers and got great response from door hangers left at houses where nobody was home
    1 - It works
2 - Its not illegal, even if somebody bought a little "no soliciting" sign at home depot, or have cameras (yeah the police REALLY want to look at it because they have nothing better to do lol) its still legal
3 - You will run into a lot of cry babies at their doors, deal with it
4 - You will run in to MANY cry babies saying door to door doesn't work, (the bike shed effect) it does

Warrior forum isn't the best place to talk about offline marketing strategies from my experience. Good luck with your campaign David, I would even go knocking a week after your door hanger drop, you will pick up all the lazy people who are interested but didn't get around to your mailer, feel free to contact me and let me know how it goes, I would like to hear your results

David, this section of the forum can be biased toward Internet marketing. Did you know there is an offline section? Post there - you'll get better responses and lotsa folks there know their stuff.

Thanks. Sorry, I figured that out kind of late. I'm new to the forum and this thread is my first post.
