I have links to it included at the end of articles I've written (about my niches) which are published in ezines whose subscribers are already known to be interested in the niche, on websites and other blogs where the same is true of the readers/visitors/subscribers, in magazines, and so on. So I'm getting my content read by highly targeted audiences without having to do the targeting myself. The publishers get the content they constantly need (almost always without having to pay for it), and I get some of their existing traffic without needing to depend on search engines. Everyone wins. It's called "article marketing."

Also some guest posts on other people's blogs (exactly the same idea, really, but sometimes even better because I can go back and answer their readers' questions and interact with them), and a few minor frills like blog-commenting, forum-posting, answering questions and so on.

I don't use anything like that - not really targeted enough for me (not without my needing to do the targeting myself, anyway).

You should become a member of Triberr. It’s a bloggers’ community. I’m getting many new RSS feed readers since I became a member:

    http://triberr.com/pages/dashboard-influencer.php

Go also to Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging - ProBlogger and follow their tips. You should also leave intelligent comments under their articles because this blog gets a lot of traffic.

Thanks for the tip to problogger. I have been away from forums for awhile but have come back. I will be looking for different ways to get my new blog out there myself. The problogger site looks good.

I've found that submitting articles to article directories can work just as well for promoting a blog or any website. You need quality original content and you have to start with doing a lot of work on keyword research before starting - in order to target the best keywords that apply to your blog's topics.

I don't really do social media marketing. I know that I probably should, but I do a lot of blog commenting, forum marketing and some youtube videos.

      Hi sbabzy,
Have you tried the newsletter option? I know (still never used personally) that with Wordpress, visitors can subscribe for receiving a regular newsletter (after you write 1, 2, 5... posts, it's your choice). It's a nice way to bring back your visitors to your blog.

How has that worked for you?

        Can you measure it?

If not, then you don't know if it was effective other than a bunch of people who may or may not be your target audience seeing a web address on your shirt.

These types of things can easily be measured with special redirect links

mywebsite.com/freestuff may be a special link on a tshirt which can be tracked or even a single letter, special qr code or one hundred other ways. The idea here is the internet is a tool to become a success. Brick and mortar advertising is a tool to become a success. They should not be skipped or avoided for the other.

    How to get traffic?

Have you heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

I have optimized my blogs for Google, Yahoo and Bing! I have my own private blog network that helps me rank for many terms on Google. Usually starting a blog takes 1-2 weeks to rank for terms and get 40-50 unique visitors per day.

I will be writing a tutorial on how I do this for you guys, so stay tuned!

Like a few people have said, blog commenting and forum posting is a great place to start, as long as you are consistent with it, in the long term it will surely pay off.

    Hi,
I didn't read all the comments, but, do you know about Bizsugar? You may post your blog posts on this site and interact with other article writers. This will ,also get you some traffic.

Have you noticed a theme here?

There is a myth that there is free traffic. Let me destroy that myth for you real quick...

A: Free Traffic = Time which = Cash

B: Paid traffic = More Free time which = more cash in your pocket

Simple there is no such thing as free traffic. You will either pay for it with time which you will never get back or make up or you will pay with cash, credit card paypal whatever.

I would start out with free traffic while learning the best places and how to use paid traffic. Then mix them.

Since you're working with a blog, you want to stick to the blog world. Blog commenting is huge. It doesn't earn you much, but this is one of those "don't put all of your eggs in one basket" things. What it does create is relationship with the blog owners and members that you comment on. It sticks you in your niche (if that's what you're commenting on), and it does pay off in the end.

Guest blogging is a critical move whether or not you want to do it. You need to get your name out on other blogs in your niche. On top of that, blog owners love to link back to other blogs in their niche. You'll have favor over other people asking to guest blog for sure because you're someone that Google deems "a good fit" for that blog to allow to guest post.

Forum posting (in your niche...not on here) is really helpful as well. If you have a travel blog...stick to travel forums. Many niches are very interactive.

You can build massive authority for your blog without doing any of this.

Who wants to troll around commenting on other people's blogs and forums just to hopefully get noticed?

And while I do agree guest blogging is effective at getting the word out about your blog and getting some traffic, it's not a "critical move" as you put it.

There are much faster ways to build up an audience and reach where you have people coming back to your site over and over again.

I've done it in a couple of niches and I can do it in just about any niche I want much faster, no matter how much competition there is.

A bit ironic (and massively hypocritical) that this is coming from someone who is "trolling around" on another forum with two signature links themselves don't you think?

          That's funny.

One is to my personal facebook page which i hardly make any money from (actually make none from it) and the other is a review of a time saving product I maybe make $30 a month from.

I wouldn't call that effective trolling.

The other $20K last month and $20K+ this month I assure you did not come from trolling this or any forum.

Look through my posts and see if I'm trolling or actually providing real value. I mean just in this thread alone I provided a ton of value - you just may not actually see it or its over your head.

If forum posting is so not effective for you then why do you have them in your link?

Look through my posts and see if I'm trolling or actually providing real value.
I was simply repeating your own words back to you. If you have an issue with what I said, then take it up with yourself, not me.

I mean just in this thread alone I provided a ton of value - you just may not actually see it or its over your head.
While that is debatable, I never said that you didn't. I'm simply pointing out that it's hypocritical to bash forum posting as a legitimate marketing strategy when you yourself are using it.

Again, all I did was repeat your own words back to you. If you take umbrage at what I said, take it with yourself, not me.

I'm not trying to bash or insult you in any way, just pointing out that what you're saying is at odds with what you're doing.

Great post I'm sure I'll find it useful

Is an example of a spammy post from which those poor, untrained, desperate souls try to make money. I was once accused in a martial arts Yahoo group of it being a coincidence that the topics I discussed I happened to have written books on the subject. More like I'm blessed with being able to make money and discuss something I love. Yes I've moved on from martial arts books, but to be able to help others with quality information in multiple forums and other social media while being able to feed your family is a true blessing. Especially when you consider 90% (I think it was) of the people out there with jobs do not like their jobs.

There are so many different ways to get more people to be aware of your blog. I think the best thing to do is to simply just choose ONE method and master that traffic generation method.

You might also consider using traditional offline method to get more people to know of your website as most people are not doing that. Yeah it is ironic that you might have to use the offline method when more people are getting online. But to me personally, as long as the method works, it is a good method whether it is offline or online.

Blog advertising is not a hard job as the ways are simple and they do not take time. Place links to your blog in original niche articles you write. They can also be included in the author bio. Article submission to Directories help you get better traffic and ranks. When you are doing this make sure you regularly write informative articles and have them posted. They should be informative and educative to the visitor. You can also activate RSS Feeds and get more traffic to your blog consistently. Problogger and StumbleUpon are great for promoting your blog and improving web presence so you can check them out too!

    Don't forget Blog Carnivals/Linkies!

As well as the power of series and events. I'm about to run an ebook writing challenge (see my signature for details) and will be creating lots of useful content during the month to support it. I've already seen a big spike in my traffic.

Advertising is all well and good but you need something to advertise in the first place!

I have my blog configured to ping a number of blog aggregation
sites, and then also to relay each post to a couple of social
media sites. This is done with plug-ins.

I also show the "Post To Pinterest" button on some posts, and
my blog visitors often share those posts.

I also often share the urls of some posts (to social media sites)
    using Hootsuite.
