Do lists work for every niche?- Monetizing an Aquarium Website

Hello,
I always here about how the money is in the list, however, I was wondering to lists always work for every niche.

The reason I ask this is because I am considering getting involved in the aquarium niche. Most people either purchase their stuff offline or purchase them at major online stores where they don't have affiliate offers.

However, isn't the goal of your list to refer them to affiliate offers? I guess you could refer them to your own products too but I don't have any of my own aquarium products?

And without adsense how would you recommend monetizing an aquarium website? Adsense comes to mind but isn't an option for me. I've seen some of the major companies paying for banner ends but then you need high traffic... or a popular forum. What's your guy's suggestion?

Edit: One more question. Would it be worth it to promote my website on internet marketing forums such as this through the use of the signature or would the traffic not be worth it?

Amazon has a lot of aquarium products. You can start a blog on aquariums and offer tips on aquarium purchasing, different types of fish, fresh water aquariums, salt water aquariums, cleaning aquariums etc and then throw in some affiliate links.

Either you could start an aquarium blog linking to affiliate products, as mentioned above, or become an Amazon Associate an set up an online stre offering various aquarium related products

I understand that Amazon has aquarium products, however, my personal experience as an aquarium owner and I've also talked to other aquarium owners is people tend not to purchase aquarium products off of amazon, instead preferring to get them from an aquarium company (like kensfish.com, petsolutions.com ect.), where the prices are similar but its from a company dedicated to aquariums. Though maybe the trend is changing

Check and see if any of those aquarium or pet stores have affiliate programs. Sometimes brick and mortar places do, and you can get paid for sending your visitors over.

I would start out with AdSense (I mean, it's probably just going to run ads for companies like Petco and stuff anyways) as well as Amazon affiliate links. From there, if you build your traffic and following enough, you might be able to land a deal for advertising with some of the companies you mentioned. You may even be able to contact them and speak with them about selling their products.

Either way, you have to start somewhere. I would focus on building your content first and work in the other stuff later. That's just me though.
True, to be honest the average home aquarium owner probably won't be my target. I'm looking more towards the people I know who have spent $100,000+ on aquarium systems, or those aquarium keepers who are really dedicated to the hobby and will spend hundreds of dollars or even thousands. To fully setup a nice 55g freshwater aquarium can easily cost $500+.

Adsense is not available for me, however, I'll look into amazon. I also like your suggestion about selling there products, some popular companies with expensive products (ecotech marine comes into mind) sells high-end products priced into the hundreds or thousands of dollars but they don't really sell any themselves.

        Thanks for the advice guys!

A list is always important because it maintains your relationship with your visitors and you will be less dependent on Google's traffic.

You could also do a blog on common causes for your fish to die. Then you can lead them into a sale of a product answer some questions that are closely related. Kinda like a sop opera does. Get them involved and interested with quality content and give them just enough then end with a cliffhanger into the sale of your own informational product on the subject.

You could build up a whole line of them for all different fish aliments.
Best of luck on your project...

Absolutely. The reason why people see building a list in other niches to be harder is because of the lack of General Solo Ad sellers. Most solo ad sellers only have IM clients. There are good solo ad directories around that offer General Solo Ads. However, please note that Solo Ads is not the only way to build up your list. If you ask me it's quick and effective...that's what it's made for. It's not really for building up a sustainable long-term business.

Most people either purchase their stuff offline or purchase them at major online stores where they don't have affiliate offers.
Just did a search for you on Google Keyword Adwords Tool. "buying aquarium fish" came up with 2,400 searches a month, "buying a fish tank" came up with 3,600 searches. These amounts are pretty substantial to rank for already, depending on how much competition you have.

I guess you could refer them to your own products too but I don't have any of my own aquarium products?
You don't need any of your own products. However, do you know where to find Aquarium Suppliers that offer affiliate programs? I'm sure there are some out there.

And without adsense how would you recommend monetizing an aquarium website? Adsense comes to mind but isn't an option for me. I've seen some of the major companies paying for banner ends but then you need high traffic... or a popular forum. What's your guy's suggestion?
You can write an ebook on how to keep your fish alive (Not Joking, fishes die all the time and people have no clue why they die) and then sell it for a couple of bucks. Major companies aren't going to pay for banner ads on your website unless they are related. Do you know of any major aquarium companies? If you want high traffic in this case I would go for SEO, but that's a long term solution.

Edit: One more question. Would it be worth it to promote my website on internet marketing forums such as this through the use of the signature or would the traffic not be worth it?
Find a fish forum and do it there.

On a side note may I know why you want to venture into this industry? If you have some knowledge/passion/background for it, it can help you greatly since you can create content easily. Secondly, this seems like a pretty tough niche to get into.

Just want to add there's a popular series on Animal Planet right now: Tanked. It features some guys installing some of the biggest Aquariums in the world. I'm not sure how you can monetize this but It can be lucrative if you think out of the box. Perhaps you could do a review of the show on a website then sell some aquarium products?

    All the best mate

Here is what I would do if I were you.

First, just off the top of my head you could be adding some of these words to your main keyword of "High End Aquariums"

    Tips
    Maintenance
    Cleaning
    Customization
    Repair
    Setup
    Reviews

Even adding words like "blogs" or "forums"

Do searches in google with all of these things and see what comes up.

Pay attention to any Payperclick ads that show up on the first page results and any ads, (text ads, banner ads, ppc ads) that show up on any of the actual websites.

Those ads might lead you to different affiliate programs that you didn't know about.

another you can do is to create a list of all the parts that come with aquariums like covers, filters, cleaning supplies, sand, rocks, etc.

And run those through Google and see what comes up.

Oh since you are going to do all of that, you might as well do a search in Google for "Affiliate programs for high end aquariums" or "Affiliate programs that sell high end aquariums" or "High end aquarium affiliate programs"

Might save you some time, lol.

EDIT: I just typed the first one into Google "Affiliate Programs for High End Aquariums" and a bunch of results showed up.

I can't say, because I haven't tried every niche ... but they certainly work for every niche I've ever tried, if properly built and used: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post6123982

Of course, there are people who fail with them, too.

It sounds a good idea, to me, in principle.

I think "enthusiasm niches" are widely underrated and "problem niches" are widely overrated, by comparison. I'm glad, anyway, that so many of my competitors seem interested exclusively in "problem niches" and less interested in looking at the "enthusiasm niches" which can be relatively easy income-sources for skilled, list-building affiliates.

List-building is certainly particularly beneficial for "enthusiasm niches".

For me, there would need to be appropriate affiliate products available, with sales pages appropriate for my traffic demographics, otherwise I wouldn't be looking at the niche in the first place. (Like you, I'm not interested in AdSense at all.)

It's not easy to see benefits from doing that (though admittedly it isn't easy to see any harm coming from it, either, as long as you don't overdo it in too many different irrelevant places and fall foul of the Penguin updates). I don't link here to any of my own affiliate niche sites.

You know the answer to that. It is because of the fact that a person wouldn't be as desperate to buy a book with the latest recipes from a celebrity chef as the one who is facing divorce, and earnestly wants to fix his marriage.

I'm sure that's so, but it totally ignores the fact that 30 (and sometimes even 300) times as many people are trying to sell the "desperate niches" e-books as are trying to sell the "enthusiasts' e-books". Anyway, I'm very glad for the sake of my own business that that's the general perception of "what's best to promote". :p

This question (like so many very widely misunderstood marketing questions) boils down to whether you want to sell jeans or skating videos: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post8192216

Aquarium niche? I would think email marketing to that market would be like shooting fish in a barrel! And considering we are talking about fish...what about scaling your marketing? (I'm here all week folks...try the fish!)

It's a hobby and a rather involved one from what I've seen. The one tropical fish hobbyist I knew spent a great deal of time researching new additions and accessories. Alexa and Shane_K provided some good points to ponder. Enthusiasts live up to that title from what I've seen.
