Default Quick Tip - Wordpress & Hostgator

I've just started using wordpress so appologies if this is common knowledge, but I've just found a nice way to upload wordpress to hostgator sites and wanted to share:

CPanel > Fantastico De Luxe (Under Software Services) > Wordpress (Under Blog) > New Installation

Just select which domain you're installing it to, pick a usrnm and pswrd, and it'll modify all the the code for you so you don't need to bother editing any files.

You don't even need to download wordpress, it'll do it all for you :-)

Yeah, that's a Fantastico thing, not just on Hostgator.

Which version of WordPress is HostGator's Fantastico installing these days?

Yes, Fantastico is a Great way to install new blogs. It's not always the best way though to upgrade them. I've had several problems trying to upgrade blogs through Fantastico. If you install that way, I recommend using the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin to handle your upgrades or, better yet, do it manually.

No need now - once you have v2.7.1 you can now install upgrades automatically from the dashboard. Nice!

I second HG - I've found their service to be stellar - they've gotten me out of a lot of jams that were way above and beyond what HG's support is intended for. I've spend hours on the built in instant messenger with tech support and they've always delivered - even on weekends. Highly recommended.

OMG i am soooooooooo over shared hosting and WP.

I run into problems with being constantly suspended because of autoblog plugins using too much CPU time, stuff like that.

Best thing i did: move all my WP blogs to my "own" VPS....shared hosting and relying on THEM for my business is BAD. There's always some plugin causing trouble and those hosters usually suspend without a warning.

I could have warned you about this. Hostgator in particular has banned all autoblog plugins form their servers.

Autoblogs need to run on VPS boxes.

What's an example of an Autoblog?

It scrapes content from other website's RSS feeds and displays it on your own. A big copyright no-no.

If you don't have any of the following plugins, you're ok.

-RSS2Blog
-WP-O-Matic
-WP-Autoblog

There may be a few more that were developed I'm not aware of.

Nice tip! Another cool feature with the new WP version is being able to install plugins through the control panel.

I know that many warriors sing the praises of Hostagtor but since I joined them 6 months ago I find it a very restricted service. I have an excellent host whom I have been with since 2000 that costs less and leaves Hostgator dead for service, options, inclusions and unlimited mail, sub-domains and so on.

It is definitely not the best one to go with so I am not surprised by this frustration as I have been frustrated with many things since starting with them.

The copyright thing is not necessarily true.

If you are posting snippets and linking to the site you might be within fair use... in fact, re-posting is sometimes the content creators intention anyway. They can, after all, set the feed for snippets regardless of intention.

Also, not all autoblogs are run by the software mentioned... could be pulling from YouTube (which provides embed code), etc... any number of allowable sources.

Now, to be clear... I don't currently have any public autoblogs. Also, if anyone is depending an a blog to run itself without any human input for their sole income... probably a bad idea. Multiple autoblogs... getting closer. Somewhat automated... somewhat human posted... I think that is getting near the best long term solution.
