Teach me the basics? What do I need to know?

I'm looking to get into online marketing which is why I joined this forum but it seems like everyone uses this site as a way to make more money and not actually give help, but I want to get into online marketing and open up a site and sell items, but I have no idea where to start, as it takes money to make money as everyone knows. Heres a few questions.
1.What kind of supplies/items should I sell?
I have no idea what I should sell, I am thinking maybe apparel or something that doesn't take a lot of money to put in, as to get out.
2.How should I open up a website, what is the best way?
I know there's some great website builders out there like WordPress but what is the best way to get into building a website?
3.How do you get people to find you/Buy your items?
and most importantly
4.What are the basics that I need to know in order to have a successful internet marketing business?

There are so many answers to this question. Search the forum using the search function.

You will have to try things for yourself, get a domain name, hosting autoresponder set up to build a list which is advised.

this forum is a great resource using the search function as mentioned.

You can start with affiliate marketing, selling other peoples products for a commission before your own. To promote these you need traffic to your sites or blog.

This is a broad set of questions though i have to admit.

Yeah possibilities are endless. Would recommend starting low budget and slowly as it takes time whatever your going to start doing. Wouldn't start with any paid ads but there are 100s of good start up ebooks around here, and if you do have a spare $20 then the war room is a good place to invest that as you will learn so much and very quickly too.

All of the answers you're looking for have been covered in detail multiple times in various threads throughout WF. You have to take the time to dig deeper and find the gold that's here.

One thing you'll learn very quickly on forums like this is that very few knowledgable people will answer broad questions like this. There is no golden way or suggested method. You have to decide these things based on the research you do.

The good news is... After you learn the answers to these on your own, you will certainly have more specific questions about what you've learned, which experienced folks are much more likely to answer for you.

For instance "what kind of terms should I be looking for in a potential apparel drop shipper?" Come back with those types of questions after heavy use of the search tool, and you'll learn a lot here.

Hey Tyler - think you will find a TON of great, free content on this forum. Most of it is great quality information, so make sure you learn what you can from here.

Let me try and address your questions by number:

    1. I have always found my most successful sites are those where I have aligned an interest/passion or experience with a commercial opportunity. So I will head into a market that interests me, dig into what is selling (could be information, tangible things, a service, etc...) and make sure I get in front of, and gain the trust of those who want to buy that product or service. Suggest you do the same.

    2. I am a big fan of hosting my own Wordpress blogs. You can get great quality and feature-rich web hosting for $10/month or less, setup a domain and use the automated installtion of Wordpress from your webhost to get a blog up and running within an hour. From there, you post content, build social networking presence and use other techniques to draw traffic toward your site

    3. First of all, you pick markets where people already want to buy your items - then you work at getting in front of them by developing interesting content, reaching them through search engine optimization, social networking and possibly via advertising (optional) or via affiliate marketing (where you own your own product like an ebook, report or service that you allow others to promote for you and send traffic and customers your way)

    4. What I've written above is a good start, other than this I would dig in a little deeper into a) Business models - how money is made online b) how to generate compelling content which attracts people toward you versus your competition c) information product creation if you find this appealing (this is my favorite method of monetization) d) basics of how lead generation, sales funnels and conversions happen as these are the fundamentals of online marketing

    Hope this helps,

    Jeff

I read a great article recently about selling candles online. There is no start up cost. You don't make the candles, rather you would be selling the candles of affiliates, so you start by signing up as an affiliate for as many candle companies as you can (free ones only). You then sign up for a free website- the article suggested using weebly. List the products here. You will get a percentage of what you sell. You can contact stores that may want to carry the products in order to get bulk orders. You can also order some of the candles to sell at flea markets and craft shows. Be sure to distribute your business card there with your website address so that people will order from you to restock. As far as getting more hits on your site, I think it really can pay to utilize SEO and back linking companies that are reputable and inexpensive- they do exist. Some people offer these services on sites like Fiverr so you will only pay $5. Of course, you can also advertise on forums and do link exchanges on your own. Hope this helps!!

Yeh I can see the sharks coming already, "just click this and it will show you everything you need to know" probably not...

ANYWAY... Say I title a website with something relevant to what I am selling or whatever the website is for, is there any legal guidelines I have to follow for this? Do I have to patent the name of whatever I title the website or get it checked to see if someone has the same name patented?

Also if I do open up a website, do I have to set it up as kind of like a business if I am selling merchandise? As in pay taxes, accounting and what not, hows that all work?

Of course you need to pay attention to trademarked terms and names - you will get a "stop use" order for using many product or company trademarked names.

You must also abide by FCC regulations that govern the claims of websites, opt-in information collected, income claims, health claims, use of testimonials, etc...

Finally, yes - you need to set up a business (even if it is a sole proprietorship) so you claim your income and expenses. Further, you do have to pay attention to sales tax for sales within certain countries and states/provinces where your business is setup.

You ignore a lot. You have to read many posts in this forum, many free ebooks, and blog posts until you will understand the basics.

Many Warriors give valuable lessons here, but you must understand who is really giving good advice. If you don't understand what they are saying you cannot evaluate their help.

You have to study internet marketing if you want to reap all the benefits you can have in this forum.

Happy to see I got under your skin Chase - seems you have a bitter taste in your mouth from other people working so hard to take your hard earned money.

Sad thing is that the people that actually do get in contact with me get free real life advice on getting started in the industry without any upsell, simply the opportunity to gain a relationship with someone that's been in at it for years. I go over their goals and offer them guidance on strategies that they can take to achieve everything they want. Sadly there are people like you out there that are so skeptical that this exists that you have to start crying wolf. You didn't contact me, you have no clue what I do or what I'm about. I could easily show you testimonials of people thanking me for helping them and taking the time out of my day to do so.

Why do I do this?! Because at the end of the day I am an industry leader. If I offer my professional knowledge to people who need it in turn I create a lasting relationship with them which is the foundation of any business.

So please stop thinking of me as a shark. I'm not. I'm not here to sell you on anything. I simply would like to help you or anyone else that asks. Seeing that this place is full of sharks I know it is easy to get confused between the two, but I find it quite sad that you would have to react this way simply based on my offer to help someone in need.

PS. The general discussion forum may be the last place I look to make money. I think both of us understand that.

Keep your money in your pocket. Do not pay for any advice/coaching/consulting or whatever other name many fast talkers label it as.

read a few classic books on marketing, to get the concept of marketing persuasion. then use that knowledge to weed out the intent of peoples posts here.

the more I learned about online marketing here the more jaded I became, since most of Internet marketing schemes or make money online theories are bullshit.

Listen to some dan kennedy stuff if you really want to learn about how these 'coaches' operate, hes the biggest crock of shit around, and idolized by the scammers go figure .

    1. If you want to start selling, you must research first. Go to Amazon/Ebay or check the keywords on Gtrends.

    2. Wordpress is good, very easy to rank and a lot of features, like plugins, themes, etc.

    3. You can be found by going to forums of your niche, if you have budget then go advertise on Adwords or Fb ads.

    4. You need to find a mentor, it will save your time and money than just doing blindness online.

    Hey Tyler,

People do use this site to make money, I'm not saying they don't, but people help each other here too.

Ok, now, here are my answers to your questions:

    1. You could sell almost anything online. You could either sell your own products or someone else's products. If you sell someone else's product, you'll be an affiliate for that product and you'll get some commission from the product owner.

Some places that have good affiliate programs are clickbank.com, JVZoo.com, Amazon.com, cj.com and ebay.com.

Since you said you want to go with selling apparels, you might want to check out ebay.com or amazon.com. Their commissions are lesser than that of digital products, but amazon.com pays you commissions for any product the customer buys through you, not just the product you are promoting; so the commissions will easily add up to a decent amount.

    2. Get a domain and a hosting. Your hosting's cpanel will have the option to install wordpress. Wordpress is the easiest way to set up a website, in my opinion.

    3. You can bring traffic to your site in a hundred different ways. Some of the free ones are social media marketing, video marketing, classifieds marketing (since you'll be selling apparels), forum marketing and so on. But, you need to research the traffic ways based on your niche.

Search on this forum and you'll find tons of threads that talk about traffic.

    4. You need to know about traffic generation (obviously) in order to get any kind of success in internet marketing. Read extensively about this subject. Also, look at sales conversion too, since, as you might know Traffic + conversion = sales = $$.
Also, read about list building too, since it is THE best way to really make it in internet marketing.

    Well, I guess that's it.

    Good luck.

      Tyler,
You are right many do use this site to make more money and in doing so they are actually a great help. I have received excellent products in the forum that the regular online traffic pays more for...HINT a form of marketing.

With that said...a good marketing plan is essential before you get into making a decision as to what exactly you will be selling online. Doing an online business is not so different than an offline business when it comes to planning your marketing.

      Consider the following questions...
      • Who needs the apparel (or anything) you plan to sell? (This is your target market)
      • Why should they go to you rather than one of the bazillions sites out there that are your competitors? (This is your unique selling point)
      • How will people find you? (This is driving traffic)

For the sake of this example I will only keep it to these three questions. There are others which essentially formulate your online business plan.

      1. What kind of supplies/items should I sell?
To answer your first question it will depend on your target market and what THEY WANT.

Advice: choose something where people have a need and are willing to buy and that it is something YOU enjoy, otherwise you will not be very convincing in your offers. (You will find that you will be doing a lot of trial and error. But if you are going to fail...fail fast, learn and go on).

      2. How should I open up a website, what is the best way?
Yes, Wordpress is the best platform (it is not a website builder) in all actuality it is more like mini computer program that receives commands through plugins and has themes that make it pretty.

The nice thing is you do not have to learn a coding language but I still advice you learn some as you will find that little bit of code knowledge will help you add some tweaks later on. You can go to http://w3schools.com for some help...but do not overwhelm yourself by trying to learn it all, just know that it is there when you need it.

      3. How do you get people to find you/Buy your items?
Ah yes, traffic and how to get it to your site...you will find is what we all strive for and that is why Warriors like the forum as it is a source of knowledge as well as getting traffic to their site...Marketing you gotta love it!

Again, the answer to your question will depend on your intended market...

For example lets say you sell guitars then maybe you could post an online video on Youtube that gives your target market a tip that has not been shared before allowing them to tune their instrument consistently...from there you lead them to your site where you have an offer, be it more tips, an info product or the physical product itself.

4.What are the basics that I need to know in order to have a successful internet marketing business?
Hopefully, the above will give you some basic ideas...

      In summary:
      Know your market
Offer them something irresistible (something your market wants)
Target them and drive them to your offer
Conversions (making sales, collecting email, etc)

      Best wishes.
