Viable? Write comprehensive documentation in a VERY competitive niche?

This is one is kinda related to the other post I just put up but only loosely.

Unlike what I asked about in the other post this one has to do with whether or not it is a viable marketing idea to write a comprehensive, book like, quantity of documentation for a software program that is VERY popular?

I have noticed something.

There are a TON of web pages on how to use this particular software program. All over. How to do this or that. All manner of things.

And then there are books. Lots and lots of books. Running about $20-30 each.

The problem with what is out there now is that if one doesn't want to buy a book (for whatever reason) one is stuck having to go all over the place to find whatever info one is wanting to find out about how to use a particular aspect of this software program.

How to install it? Google search and then go read about how to install it after spending a few minutes to look at which site might talk about that the best way.

How to use it? How to create content with it? Etc..

One has to search and search and then go through websites to find the good one's to get at the info one needs.

There seems to be a need for ONE comprehensive site that would have it all under one roof so to speak.

Well organized. Where one could easily find what they need quickly. Without having to search all over and visit various sites.

And without having to shell out $20-30 for a book.

I am sure this idea has been thought of before. Just wondering how workable this idea is?

Has anyone ever had success with this type of thing?

Any cons to this idea?

I would monetize it by basically using affiliate links to hosting in connection with the content.

Also I would not give it all away at once. Each page of the content would be a stand alone page. Not linked to the rest at all.

A visitor would have to subscribe and receive links to additional content by email. I would not rely on Google traffic but would use other traffic generating ideas to get people to come visit the site and hopefully subscribe.

The problem is that people often look for that information in chunks or nibbles. They aren't looking to buy the whole package.

Thanks very much for that input WriteAway.

That's the kind of input I was looking for. It is difficult sometimes, oftentimes actually, for me to see things from within the shoes of others.

I personally like a one stop resource instead of having to go all around searching and searching every time I want to know something about this piece of software.

That gets old after a while.

But you rightly point out that people oftentimes just want a nibble or a piece and they don't want to rifle through a one stop resource to find that they want.

Googling is good enough for the nibble they need.

This may not be a viable thing for me to get involved in creating.
