Best video format for information product?

Hey guys,
I currently have 313gb worth of video I am about to edit into some instructional guitar videos.

I wanted to ask some advice from those who have had experience editing large video files and also wanted to ask a couple questions.

1. What is the best video format to deliver to my customers? Obviously something that still looks good, with smaller file size and will work seamlessly on both PC & Mac.

2. For the video editors here. Would it be best to compress the video files (which are currently HD) before editing to help the stress load on my computer? I have 3 different camera angles (one main one) and 2 audio tracks. I am using Cyberlink Powerdirector 10 for the editing.

And if it would be best to compress the files first, what program would you recommend? I am running Windows.

Cheers for the help,

Charlie.

    Render out to MP4 first.

Once you render out to MP4 run it though handbrake to reduce the file size even more.

I wouldn't compress the video files before you edit because it will lessen the quality of the end result.

Thanks for that Beatinest, wouldn't reducing the file size be compressing the video? I'm a little new to video editing so I really don't have any idea haha

If you compress it before editing, you'll compress it more when doing your final render and again if you run it through handbrake or any other converter you choose.
= compressing 3x, each time lowering the quality of the video.

If you don't compress it before editing you are only compressing it 2x. So you will only lower the quality twice instead of three times.

      Cool cheers Saul.

And Beatinest, I just rendered a video to MP4 and turned it from 248mbs to 16.7mbs so that is a HUGE help!

hi, I use power director too. I don't know about compressing files before you edit them because it's quite likely you'll lose quality, which will be lost again once you render the videos... Unless you have a very good compression software I would work with the raw file as it is.

As for the "best video format" guess what, it depends on what you're going to do with it

I render in 720p MP4 format, but that's because I optimize for youtube - it's a give and take between size and quality (I have a pretty crappy upload speed so I need to make smaller files). It's the "lowest" HD I could achieve, so it's still pretty good to watch, but I'm sure that if file size wasn't a problem I could do much better with the image quality.

I can't help you on sound settings because I'm always having trouble with that - sound is the one thing that more often than anything else causes me problems... don't know if it's powerdirector or my pc but the levels are always all over the place and it takes me ages to normalize it all :/

    Hope this helps!
    Saul

Ps. not sure if mp4 is mac friendly but I would *guess* it is...

Yes, you want to use MP4. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, it's also the best format for mobile devices.

I prefer AnyVideoConverter (free version) over Handbrake and the other 6-7 video converters I tried.

Mp4 is the best for online video use handbrake to get them ready. Make sure to set the bit rate around 960 to prevent any skipping or slow video when playing online.

mp4 is definitely the best. As to much your compress it, it really depends on the size of the videos and how they are going to be delivered to the end user.
