Bidding on expiring domain w/ no bids. Wait until last moment?

I've got a question about expiring domain auctions. I've never actually bid on one before. If you come across a domain that's got no bids on it and it's got about a day until it ends, is it best to wait until like the last five minutes or something before you bid, or should you start bidding now? What's the sort of best practice in that regard where the domain has no current bids on it?
I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.
