What works best for you with Youtube marketing?

I've been playing with youtube for a little while now trying to make some money off it. So far i have been buying PLR and trying to drive videos to that plr to sell for $7, then monetizing the download pages with Clickbank offers.
I'm trying different niches but have only had 1 plr make a few $7 sales. For one of those sales the buyer did order a clickbank product. I've gone for finding long tail keywords and making short (30-60 secs) videos and try and make it a bit of a numbers game. I must of made over 150 videos so far. I know testing is key and i have done a fair bit of that, but I don't get the feeling I'm nailing things correctly here.
I know there are other approaches to making money off youtube, and would appreciate anybody's thoughts on this as I would be happy at making $5 a day at youtube/video marketing.
I know I may be barking up the wrong tree with what I have been doing as others use CPA, Clickbank, trends or promoting WSO's, which I have never tried.
Somebody has told me that it is difficult to make bigger commissions off youtube because of the sort of audience there (looking to be entertained).
Yep, just looking for something that might work well.

Youtube loves quality and loves when people comment, share and like your videos. If you mass produce junk, you're going to be spinning your wheels for a long time. Slow down, do some quality stuff and go for 7 minute videos explaining them.

Do you think it is essential to put yourself on camera or a least voice?
What about the types of things to promote with video?

there's your answer. I don't know about bigger commission but your friends sounds just right when he says people on youtube are looking to be be entertained... so do that?

I do just that (I make "Let's Play" videos) and it's working just fine for me. Not the 5$ a day you're aiming for (not yet ;-) but I am on a constant growth, I recently partnered with an important network and I'm having a good time on the whole.

I actually answered Rob with an example of the types of things that work for video.

So I figure, I might as well post it in this thread as well, so it was useful for anyone else, and possibly helped get the discussion, and ideas, flowing... so that everyone could bring up points, to help one another.

So here is what I sent him, and my example, of how to think with video.

Rob,

The biggest issue with getting traffic to actual offers from a YouTube video is... why would they want to go to your site? Obviously with desperate niches, they are wanting to find an answer and are more likely to look at how to get to your site, by clicking a link in the description or typing in a URL shown in your video. But still, it doesn't happen like many of the people like to say it does, in "How to make money on YouTube" products.

One of the best methods you can use, is shock and a cliffhanger...

Here is an idea of what I mean... Let's say you were doing a video for an affiliate program you joined for automotive parts.

Think of the format of a "how to" video...

You're standing there talking about how you don't really work on cars, but the process seemed so simple to change your sway bar bushings or something... that you decided to do it yourself, and help others out by recording it.

You can jack the car up, etc...

Then film getting read to go under the car... you climb under it... video goes black... they hear the car fall... they hear you go mother(BEEP)...

Then text comes up... "To see what happened next... click the link in the description."

They click through...

You have another video on your site, and it auto plays, and you are saying.

"Don't worry, everything was alright. My jack gave out, but these great jack stands from "company name" saved me! whew!" I highly recommend if your are going to be doing any work under your car, or attempting the repair I was attempting, that you protect yourself. Learn more about these awesome jack stands from "company name" below this video. Now my wife won't be happy I bought the jack stands, because of the life insurance policy I have but hey... I'm happy!

You can start a whole video series on "Do it Yourself" that worked in this comedy, cliffhanger way.

Not just DIY, but any niche can use cliffhangers, or shock, that make people have to go look. Remember curiosity killed the cat? People are curious, and have to know. So that is one of the best ways to get people to click over.

So you just have to think a little different. Stupid videos that people upload with articles turned into video, with music???? People go to video sites because they don't want to read. What the hell would I go to YouTube for if I wanted to read? You can have 50 1st page number one spots with those videos and they won't produce anything.

You just have to make things unique, fun, and peek curiosity.

  The problem with doing the slideshows, or articles with music is, there is no engagement or connection with the visitors at all.
  
  This actually did work a few years back, if you had a lot of videos out there. But if you engage users, actually peak their curiosity, you can do a lot more, with a lot less videos ranking.
  
  Those videos like that, at one point, were great when YouTube links were a nice boost for SEO as a source of free links back, etc... But they never converted well. Unless you had a thousand of them showing up for multiple terms, in the same niche.
  
  Because then even .005% click through on them would make you $30 a day. Unfortunately in the U.S. $30 a day isn't going to do much. But if you were just using it as one of your income streams, and had 1000s of videos out there, that you outsourced everything, then it could work descent for you. But I would rather target higher priced, physical products, and get them on the site.
  
  Something like that car video idea, even though it would be done in a fun manner. That video would also spark a little worry, if a wife or an older child saw it. If they had a husband/dad, that messed with cars a lot. Might even give you spikes of sales on Father's day, and Christmas.
  
  But you could do the same thing with the gaming niche also for strategy guides etc...
  
  Take some BOSS monster from a video game. If you saw a video on YouTube where someone was fighting a major BOSS monster in a game. Hack that video up, and halfway through, "Want to see what the outcome was? Did I or we lose? Or Come away victorious? Click the link in the description below, or visit: www.blahblah.com"
  
  Same thing for supplements, guy getting psyched up to do a bench press with a bench with a ton of weight on it... Just as he picks the bar off the bench press, "Did He (I) make it?... blah blah...

I like the idea. I think video games is a great niche to promote via Youtube. You really need to see whats going on with that. My brain is going into overload now trying to think of different ways to create curiosity and cliffhangers lol

YouTube allows 5,000 word descriptions (last time I checked). That is overkill, but it is all good search engine fodder. Also use the annotation and other enhancements to drive people off of YouTube to your offer(s). And put a couple links in your description. Oh, and playlists are ranking nicely lately.

Some seriously SOLID tips and advice Don!

I think one of the BIGGEST problems people have, in general, is sitting down, slowing down, and coming up with a "plan" for their video. Anyone who's been online for more than a few days has seen a LOT of video and once we turn to the web for income, we see and HEAR about video constantly!

From what I've seen the BIGGEST problem is that we see SO MUCH video that we think it's quick & easy to throw a video together, upload it and wait for the money!

Sure, video CAN be pretty easy but it DOES take time, effort and PLANNING! I emphasize "PLANNING" because that's what it takes to put together a video that CONVERTS the casual visitor into an action-taker!

Like Don was saying, you NEED to think outside the box, video can and DOES drive traffic and make sales for you! Put together a plan or, in video talk, a storyboard!

Start by jotting down your ideas, maybe drag a few pics in or sketch it out on paper, that's how I like to do it, old school :-)

Once you've got your ideas down on the storyboard and you're happy with the structure and "Flow" of the video, added notes and a script, make sure you've got a STRONG call to action at the end.

By strong I don't mean "Go buy my $tuff, NOW!" I mean a very CLEAR order, don't ASK, TELL! Don't say "If you want to subscribe/like/visit" just TELL them "For more great tips, SUBSCRIBE to my channel!"

Then add an IMAGE to your video, like a "SUBSCRIBE" button and upload the video to Youtube. Then bring it into the Youtube editor, add an annotation to the "SUBSCRIBE" image asnd make it a clickable link.

Did you know you don't have to ask them to "Click the link in the description box" anymore? Now you can link directly to your OWN website, once you set your channel up for it!

Yes, you CAN and you don't have to be a full blown Youtube "Partner" like it used to be. This is a pretty recent change by Youtube but they started rolling it out the end of last year after they ripped the "Store" tab from our channels 5 months after they gave it to us!

I could sit here and type out tips all day but I REALLY have to get back to "Doing" so I hope this helps at least ONE person!

  People can connect with a video when they see who is talking to them. If you have it in you to get in front of the camera, that will help immensely. If not, at least use a picture of yourself. It really helps builds trust if you can tell them something face-to-face.

  That is great advice Donald. In the past the slide show videos with music would
  get you clicks to your offers. I can remember times when I was making $50
  bucks a day in adsense alone just from crappy video traffic. You have to evolve
  to make that same fifty bucks now. I have had to change a lot of things to
  increase to over a hundred a day now. Because here in the states, the current
  administrations policies have doubled gas prices, and stomped on small business.
  That same old $50 wont even buy me a half tank of gas. ( F-350 )
  Overall the quality of your videos will increase your quality of your channel
  and subscribers, social shares, ect..

  Well, we are talking about YouTube, but in reality it doesn't have to just revolve around YouTube. Self-hosted, and other video sites, rank rather well also. So don't limit yourself to only thinking of YouTube.

  Yes youtube is the biggest, it's owned by google etc, but it's also the one with the most ruthless competition and the biggest players. Not an easy place to compete. And if you can get the same rewards (or close enough) using other sites why wouldn't you?
  
  I don't, because I'm a lazy moron and all my friends are on youtube (and I don't sell stuff) but I do read quite a lot of video marketing materials and not all of them are about youtube. So if it's not just a fun hobby for you and you're actually trying to make money it's probably worth investigating how all the other video sites work, without forgetting to check out streaming websites too (like Watch Live Video)

1) Sharp high resolution movies. Example is go pro camera.
2) People using your product with added humor. Example - will it blend.
3) Tutorials on how to use your products or services. Example B&H
4) Create characters that are very unique. Example Venus Angelic
5) OK, use a short name. Yeah, one that is easy on memory. Example Kip Kay

Since YouTube started it has been paying me nicely each month via Adsense.
My early video efforts were not so good, but it did not seem to matter.
The key for me is to make videos that give value.
You don't need any fancy equipment, microphone, editing etc.
I just make sure I educate and give value.
I get a lot of subscribers and nice comments on my videos as a result.
The videos I made are outside the IM niche.
When I put videos up related to the IM niche they got few views.

Let's say you're a vocal coach with a voice training CD to sell, a great way to promote yourself and your product would be to post 10 to 15 minute illustration videos on youtube that have good content like, a breathing exercise, a short arpeggio exercise, a chromatic scales exercise and so forth. The idea is twofold: to show your clients (those who already have your CD) how to use the program...without giving away to much; to show prospects what your content is like and what to expect from your voice training CD AND to offer handy tips. Make sure you link back whatever you post on youtube to your blog or website.

I've done incredibly well with Youtube. So well i am not willing to express everything publicly.

Just a tip though. Create simple videos. Get a great voiceover man to read your good copy. Get them to click your links.

Do SEO to rank the videos. I have one video currently making me over an average of $100 a day with $100 cpa's.
