Can anybody explain the http and www rule please?

Hi

I just installed a blog on my site and I have managed (not intentially) to set it up without the www. at the front of it.

Does it make a difference if the site is http://domain dotcom instead of www.domain dotcom?

I would prefer to have it as www.domain dotcom and was wondering what I could do to change it.

Also would it harm my rankings etc. if I kept using the link www.domain dotcom in my articles and links?

Thanks and apologies for my tech ignorance.

Gary

If you are using www. till now with your links, then stick with it.

You can also tell google to see your domain.com linlks as www.domain.com links (In google webmaster tools) Or some kind of setting in there.

Ask your host to redirect domain.com to www.domain.com. (You can do it in your .htaccess too.)

MORE SIMPLY, as you are saying it as fresh installation, just rerun the installation with www. in the url.

Go into your WordPress wp-admin and click on General under Settings. You will be able to change the URL in that location. The URL and Blog address should be identical under a normal installation.

I believe you need to setup a 301 redirect in your DNS to solve the SEO issues. Basically if you want to use www.domain.com instead of domain.com then you need to setup a 301 redirect so domain.com points and redirects to www.domain.com. That way if you have backlinks going to domain.com and backlinks going to www.domain.com all the SEO link juice will trickle down to www.domain.com.

Hope that helps. BTW, a 301 Redirect is a "moved permanently" redirect. This will need to be changed with whoever your domains registrar is.

It's important if you're using cookies, for example, to promote affiliate programs.

For example, a cookie set by:

    http://yourdomain.com/script.php

    ...cannot be read by:

    http://www.yourdomain/script.php

...or any other script, and vice versa.

If you're using cookies for anything, it's best to stick to one or the other.

    Cheers,
