WordPress Setup Question

I'm looking to start a blog to review clickbank products. I'm very new to blogs, how they work, and everything else associated with them. Without reading so many posts here, I probably would have just registered a new domain name and put up a web page that kind of resembled a blog. But I found godaddy has an actual wordpress package. It claims to include:

  • Thousands of Free Plugins **
  • Hundreds of Free Themes **
  • Completely Customizable
  • No Licensing Fees
  • Latest Blogging Technology
  • 100+ FREE Email Addresses
  • 24x7 FTP access
  • World-Class Data Centers
  • Daily Backups
  • Best-of-Breed Routers, Firewalls and Servers
  • Web site statistics
  • Ad Credits from Google®, Microsoft® and Facebook®
  • Key Technical Features
Has anyone used godaddy wordpress? Any thoughts and reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Russ

    Hi Russ

If your web host has fantastico/cPanel, you can install a WordPress blog on your domain in a few simple clicks. WordPress is currently the industry standard for blogs.

Very easy to use, customize and powerful for SEO purposes when used correctly..

I would recommend this if it's your first time..

    Peace

As mentioned, Fantastico does all the hard work for you, my only advise to you is to review GD's hosting plans vs. other hosting plans, I found that hostgator offers more "bang for your buck" than GD, and they (HG) also have free wordpress (fantastico) installation.

      cheers

I have to echo Jay on this one. Fantastico is great. The best advantage it has in my opinion is the one-click updates. It automatically backs up your files and updates you with the latest version of wordpress whenever a new one is released. Updating is literally "push button" simple.

    Russ,

    I would strongly suggest:

    1) Use GoDaddy for domain registering.

    2) Use HostGator for hosting a dedicated WordPress install. The basic install takes a few minutes.

    3) No matter what you do keep your domain and web hosting services separated!

You can get all of the FREE help you need to get started here on the forum along with countless internet resources.

I have WordPress blogs on both GoDaddy hosting and Host Gator. I don't recommend GoDaddy but I do highly recommend Host Gator. The only reason I continue to use GoDaddy hosting is for static HTML mini-sites and for IP address diversity of my blogs.

Sorry for not giving any concrete tips here, but I think you might benefit from what I want to share here:

When I tried to install WordPress for the first time I got so confused that I was about to give up IM altogether. I kept trying and I finally realized that either I am not smart or the instructions I used were written in a way that would be impossible to understand.

Since I wasn't a child anymore and so I had already had more than one "I must be stupid!" experiences before I decided that I simply need to find the right solution.

Here is my tip: Pay someone you (and others in the market) trust to teach you how to do it. Watching a movie or following step by step instruction with nice, idiot-proof explanations is less frustrating and you can avoid making mistakes that you may regret in the future. For example: Leon McKee has offered some good tips that now, with some experience make a lot of sense to me, but before I signed up for paid training how the heck would I know that domain and web hosting services should be separated?:

I concur. You many also want to consider namecheap for a domain. Here's an article about it:

It's better to install the latest version of wordpress, rather than fantastico version.

If you've been around IM for any time, you will have heard horror stories of GoDaddy locking down websites registered there (not hosted) based on mere suspicions of fraudulent activity. Mike Filsaime is the most prominent IM'er with such a difficulty (and on a launch day no less). NameCheap is a far better choice for registering domains.

Finding a host with cPanel (version 11 or above) will get you the Fantastico application that has one-click installs of many great programs, including WordPress.

I do agree that it is smart to keep your registrar separate from your host. Good luck!

I use Wordpress exclusively and have always liked Bluehost. I would not bother self hosting without host based script backend, waste of time.

I use the service from Low Tech Big Check Domains that one of the gurus suggested (he gets a commission off it i'm sure) and I cannot figure out exactly how the WP blog is supposed to be set up.

I have a stand alone blog on WP too and still have problems getting it to look like all the others i see.

    Much success...

I use WordPress for all my sites nowadays. There are just too many great plugins and themes available. It is GREAT for affiliate sites. I've been using WP for several years for my Adwords PPC landing pages.

I personally register most of my domains with Namecheap. I find them much better priced when renewal time comes around (if you use privacy registration anyway). The only downside is they don't have an automatic renewal option...at least to my knowledge anyway. This means you have to really watch their emails to make sure you don't accidentally let a domain go. GoDaddy other the other hand has the easy auto renewal. The only bad thing about that is it is the default option. Sometimes I end up renewing domains I don't want anymore.

I highly recommend HostGator, Blue Host and Lunar Pages for hosting. I personally would not host with GoDaddy. I've heard too many horror stories.

I like voxdomains.com for website registration and I use godaddy and hostgator for a variety of sites. But all my wordpress sites are through hostgator. Fantasticos is super easy to use, even if you are new the the net. And you can install new blog templates easily with filezilla which is free. If you need someone to run you through where to install, I can give you quick tutorial as it won't take me long.
