Tip for knowing what your subscribers want (NOT SURVEYS)

Hi Warriors!

Just wanted to give you a little tip - something I have come across recently.

It's of vital importance to know what your subscribers want. Not only can you build a solid relationship with them by providing them with what they want but it's also great for when you want to market things to them.

Recently I set out to increase my open & click through rates. So after some thinking I decided to implement a Weekend Reading List. I got the idea from Ryan Diess. He sends out an email at the end of the week on a Friday, letting his subs know about OTHER PEOPLES articles and posts.

So I did the same, in the email I open it up with a personal message, let them know what's going on, how the weather is what's what basically. I then list 4 different posts or articles I have read during the week from the most trusted sources in my niche(fat loss). At the end of the email I provide links to MY posts (old and new).

Doing this has not only increased my open & click rates but it allows me to see what my readers are interested in as I can see what links are clicked on - therefore being able to provide my reader with articles & posts they are interested in and not necessarily what I enjoy writing about!

It also gives me a bit of breathing space, as If I don't email them during the week they'll still have an email from me on the Friday.

Like I say this is just a small tip that some of you might find useful.

Let me know what you think and you've got any other tips and tricks post 'em below!

Anyway back to my BBQ the missus - the suns been beating down here in the UK and if you've ever been to the UK you'd know we don't get much sunshine so we make the most of it while we can!

Take care - keep focused

Chris

    Great tip

Two newsletters I subscribed do the same thing. Every weekend they list all the important posts of that week in the email and send an email. Even I miss few emails in the week, I surely opens this weekend email to see the article links.

I've done something similar in the past, with good results. I used the "reading list" format on alternate weeks with a more standard newsletter - editorial, main article, a couple of tips, and a few links.

It worked very well, with both good open rates and click-throughs.

        Good idea.

I'm not sure I'd open refering the weather though if that was literal. The weather is tabooed in the sense that it's used when a person has nothing else of value to say.

This isn't new and your message to your list does not necessarily mean it should come from you.

Once in a while, maybe weekly or biweekly will be great for sharing piece that is not only valuable but slightly different from what you offer then regularly.

And how you monetize is up to you.

The idea is to keep your list tight, begging for more and loving you.

      Chris,

I'm not sure how this let's you know what your subscribers want. Please explain.

It seems like what you're doing is like handing a menu of four items you select to a diner and asking him if he wants one.

Even though he may show some interest in that item you selected, does that mean that it's what he really wants?

Because a person selects an article to read, is that really getting as what he wants?

Not being critical - just trying to understand your logic.

      Thanks,

      Steve

I believe that the links a subscriber end up clicking on can tell you something about his interest. That's me, maybe Chris should tell us his own point of view.

    This is just content curation.

I dont know about you guys, but I want my subscribers to read my stuff - not send them off elsewhere and build out someone elses list.

It shows you're not just a marketer but actually someone who wants to help them and share information you found valuable with them.

Mixing it up by linking to other peoples content is a good thing.

I will do the same for my list, this seems like a good idea. When you let your subscribers click on other peoples articles, you show that you share more good content from others and not only promote yourself. If that makes any sense, he he.
