Any Advice On Monetizing a Webforum?

I have a webforum that's been in existence for about 2 years. There are a little over 200 members and it is very niche specific.

Activity has gone up and down and my regulars are about 10-20 people at anytime.

The activity/community shared is often of real great value to the members, but we definitely need more.

I have another related subgroup on another forum that is pretty active and popular and I've been trying to get the people from that group to come over to my website but it's not really happening.

I've been thinking of doing courses and promoting my members, but I'm not really sure how to implement these things, gain enough interest and get more members to be active.

Any ideas appreciated!

I've had the most success monetizing a forum by building a list from it. You can capture e-mails from the people who sign up and from forms (such as a modal window). It then becomes easier to communicate with subscribers and encourage them to finally sign up or to visit your forum again and again.

You can put some ads spots "advertise here" and charge 5-10$ (or whatever) for 10 days and see how it will go.

Thanks to the both of you. For some reason, I have never thought to use that website for a mailing list. (I use my other site since I know what I'm selling to that audience)

The problem about ad spots is that the users on that site would be very upset if I just accepted ads from anyone. It is somewhat difficult to get related ads up, but I will look into finding some. It's a good idea!

I second lori's idea you could also ask other warriors if they have any interest in promoting to your niche. For a price of course.

It depends on your niche. Some legal or debt-related/finance-related niches pay well on Adsense. Set up the ads to show similar to the old layout of DP-within the post.

    - Adsense
    - Put a banner of a related product with your affiliate link.
    - Create a list with the members and promote different offers via email

I really advise you to at least increase the number of user and the level of activity before monetizing the site.

Create some space in your forum pages for ad.
First provide opportunity for free ad for a week or two.
Then charge an amount for a certain time period.

I think it will help you both earning and traffic.

Forums are notoriously difficult to monetize. I think the suggestions you've had so far are pretty good. Try and boost your member count as well if you can.

I like never blue ads as they have many niches cover. Leads are typically near $10 or more. This is good money. Look at earning per click before you choose one. I do not like sad sense. Basically, it pays pennies.

For example, things are great if you have a forum in gaming. Expect to get $10 for each new users you sign up. Also, expect recurring payments as you get more an more.

Biggest problem we got is spammers. They sign on. OK then they drop out, but hurts me. Also, they are filling the forum with garbage and spam. Most of the posts are pushing see alice and rorex reprica.

Setup a place for people to sell their services and employ admins to delete negative reviews?

    Worked out here ^^
