Converting a HTML site to Wordpress...

I want to change my company website from HTML to Wordpress. I was planning to do it this way:

- Create a Wordpress site on a directory (www.domain.com/wp/)
- Fill it up with content, test to ensure that it is running fine
- "Port" over the full Wordpress content to root domain name

Now have anyone tried porting the entire Wordpress site to root domain name?

There are many tools you can use to clone a Wordpress install and place it wherever you like. I use a paid tool called WPTwin.

I believe there are some cheap or free solutions such as Backup Buddy but I've never used them myself.

    But it's definitely possible.

Or you could just move the test site files to the root with FTP, or cpanel file manager.

Shouldn't need to change the database settings, just move the files over.

NO, he is not... because he never tried that. Otherwise he would know it doesn't work

If and when you move the WP files via FTP to the root directory - you MUST change the "site_url" and "home" values in the MySQL database wp_options table.

I can suggest 2 easy ways to accomplish what you want (besides doing what I said above: editing the DB via phpMyadmin)

        Solution A

        - login to wp-admin and > go
        - Settings > General
        - change the two URL fileds from example.com/wp to > example.com
        - Save change... and most lilely you will get an error message!
        - DO NOT TRY TO SEE YOUR BLOG'S FRONTEND
        - move the files and directories from example.com/wp/ to example.com
        - now your site should be available at the new location

        Solution B
If you are comfortable messing a bit with the code... you can have the WP engine and files installed where they are, i.e. in a subfolder (example.com/wp/) AND the site/blog to be displayed at the root > example.com

How is it that you know what I have done and have not done?? Seriously?

In reality, I've done it 100's of times. I sell plr websites that are installed exactly like that. I create them and the customer copies the files onto their domain and hosting and it works perfectly.

FYI for anyone, the url's can be set in the wp-config.php file

Same here, I use wptwin and it works like a charm.

After you have tested and completed your subdirectory wp site, just simply clone it and deploy the clone file in your root directory.

Just check wptwin for more info.

    Break a leg.

Or you could use html2wp which is a Wordpress plugin that converts HTML to WP from a fresh WP install, it's simple, but I would not use it on a site that has lots of pages. It's fine for a small website like 5 to 7 pages, or a landing or sales page with legal pages, but larger sites might be a little time consuming.
