Hello,
The title above is exactly my question. What do you think?

Provide sample articles on webpage vs provide as download link?

    I do both.

I take the view that when people visit your page they want to have all the information they need there and then. They want to decide quickly whether or not they might want to order from you. A samples page lets them do that.

I also recommend providing a PDF containing several sample articles as a download. This allows anyone who has seen the samples on site to easily save a set of samples for a more leisurely read through or perhaps to show someone else. It also makes you appear more organised and professional.

    Por Que No Los Dos?

    At the very least split-test.

My thought is that providing a download for them might compromise copyright rules since I don't own the copyright to the sample articles written for other clients.

Your sample work should be articles that you wrote and hold the copyright to. If you want to show off work that you've done for other clients, make a list of websites and magazine/ezine/newspaper/newsletter editions where they can be found.

This. If you're selling writing services, any "samples" on your site, whether posted there in full or in part, or available as a download, need to be either material to which you yourself own the copyright, or material for the use of which the copyright-owner has given permission.

In my opinion, you should leave the samples on your web site.

You want folks returning to your site as often as possible. If you create a pdf that will encourage readers to not return to your site.

If they want to copy a sample article and read it later they can. If they want you to send them an article, you can just do that on a case by case basis.

If you make a pdf and it gets spread around, that will give others access to your work without having to visit your site.

I would prefer new prospects to come to my site, get registered into my list, and find the sample articles themselves.

        Your goals may be different.

        Good luck,

        Steve
