In Your Opinion... Is Google Better Before or Now?

After all these updates, the Google search results have changed drastically. And they've gone from providing content that was created for a keyword and promoted... to showing you what they feel is 'relevant'

I can rarely find what I'm looking for anymore.

Not that it was perfect before, but what are your thoughts about how Google is returning results now versus when it was first released or say... 5 years ago?

if you use it correctly google provides great results, that's why it keeps being the top search engine. whenever I search for something, I find satisfying results.

Now, compared to when it was first released or even just 5 years ago, it provides a lot more results in terms of different media (images, maps, videos etc) so it's way better in my opinion.

    ciao

Some aspects of it are better, others are worse. You must also consider that there's many times more spam now than just a few years ago. Overall I think they are improving although they still have a lot more work to do.

In some ways it's better- in other ways it's worse.

Google's preference for videos isn't something I really care for.

I don't really care much for the preference of blogs/articles where the author's photo is there.

But at the same time- I understand why they do it- because they want to emphasize people/sites that are here to stay.

For me its still the same and still the best source of information.. Only that it is difficult to rank now than before...

I personally, take big G for what works best for me.
I always compare the results with Bing, Yahoo and
Wikipedia combining all four results, if applicable.

Yeah you might take sometime to find appropriate content as there are many spammers out there who try to take the top place with their irrelevant content, but google is yet the top search engine and always helpful

Personally I think Google is protecting the big guys. The company has made it very hard for a newbie to come in and provide a service. I can understand why this is as the big guys no doubt pay them a lot of money. But it's creating monopolies that are hard to compete against.

Whilst I am a user of big sites like Amazon for sheer convenience, the changes now make it much harder to look for an independent reseller who may offer a better price and a nicer service.

What really annoys me is Google's pagerank system. It takes months to recognise links and even then it only pays attention to a fraction of them.

Google is better now... because in the days of Altavista they were known as being "faster" but not better, quality/relevant content. Today the content is more relevant and displayed in a better format. They are indexing more of the web too (although admittedly only 0.04% of the total interwebz at last count).

I reckon Google's got much better at finding good content. I have a website now where I provide really good content. I have done almost zero SEO, and I'm getting almost 2,000 hits a day just from SEO alone.

Compare this to all the shit sites I used to get ranking in the past by blasting those forum links out with automation software.

Easier and more effective for the users.

Getting more difficult and complicated for advertisers.

It isn't going to get any easier either Google knows what
they're doing no doubt about that.

There are two sides of it. There is complete spam for some stuff, while good results that are regularly updated for others. Depends on what you're looking for, entirely.

And it doesn't work properly with some non popular stuff, example:
Search for Hacks for Counter Strike Online, it'll return stuff with Counter Strike 1.6 because that's more popular.

    Just an example.

I personally STOPPED caring about Google, this concerns my business but also personally where I see I use alternative search engines more often.

I am sick and tired of the * Google pulls off, with Google ads covering 75% of the screen, go google "web hosting" to see what I mean, or their "shopping" search which is nothing but a paid promotion service where $ decides what products are included.

If anything, I try to circumvent Google altogether in my IM.

As a user, I find it better now than before, I used to automatically go to the 3rd to 5th page back to find what I was looking for. Now, I can usually find it on the first or second page. (I also use adblock plus to block all of their ad nonsense.)

Having said that, I also am using Bing more than I used to as well ever since I added a plugin that shows Google and Bing side by side search results.

Still, overall I think they are improving but are far from reaching something close to perfection.

As a USER, I find it annoying. When I want to SHOP for something, I don't wants articles and vids and blogs etc...I want e-commerce websites that will give me what i want...big or small.

I think it is getting better in terms of SEO, a few years back, the person with the most backlinks having a certain keyword would dominate the number one spot in Google for that keyword and it was difficult competing with them. Now things are becoming better since you can rank a competitive keyword with a few high quality back links.

I'd say it's better for the user but worse for the advertiser and marketer. There needs to be more competition for Google.

Google is a mature business as they have vanquished all their search competitors. Now the focus is on maximizing profits. Organic search typically starts off with non-profit stuff like Wikipedia or generic stuff because it means people are more likely to click on the stuff that makes them money. So bad results in organic results +good results in the paid stuff = $$$$ for Google.

For non large corporate enterprises the future is not Google search.

I would say it is much worse now. The results just aren't what they used to be. Many times it pulls up old, dated information because that has more authority. So yeah..worse.
