Video marketing... what about Deaf people?

I'll be the first to say: I hate video marketing. I despise it. I don't want to listen to someone tell me what to do. I want to read it for myself. No one goes fast enough for me. Sometimes I just want a brief overview and a video doesn't give me the power to control how fast I receive the information.

That aside, in my former life, I was a certified interpreter for the Deaf and THAT segment of the population is HUGE into MLM (and I suspect internet marketing now too). So, how do you feel about denying this huge sector of the population access to information? I'm not talking about political correctness.. let's just talk from a pure numbers standpoint: there's no way to sell a Deaf person on something they can't hear. So, you've lost that sale.

Who is using ways to overcome this and what methods are you using?

(I hardly ever post, but I read and buy too much

This was brought up in the past when a video was being offered here, and one of the warriors made a comment that he couldn't hear video being deaf. The marketer had a transcription made of the video.

It is possible to put subtitles on video, so that is one option, and getting a transcription of it should always be offered.

It isn't only deaf people who are missing out but those on slow dial up who can't watch video.

It's not only the deaf who're missing ouit. I'm in total agreement with Digi. Video is way slow.

I'm not a fast reader, but I can input information twice as fast as a speaker can output it. In addition, I can go back and review for particular points many times faster with text than with video.

And come to that, the average person doing videos sounds pretty dumb because they're trying to wing it without a script or well planned outline to guide them. It's almost painful listening to an otherwise intelligent person humming and hawing and groping his way through an impromptu presentation.

All those free "gifts" of 8 - 10 - 12 videos that are going to teach me something... I skip them all. Even if they were covering new information, which they almost never are, they're so slow they're just not worth spending the time to get through them.

Can you tell I've had it with videos - many of which are really nothing but power point shows anyway?

If you're going to offer me information, guys, I'm not deaf, but I'd still rather be reading it.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
    Charles

      Well, I disagree.

      Written material... excludes who?

I mean, I suppose it excludes a person who is illiterate... but, I think there's a bigger problem with that whole scenario than merely excluding them from marketing.

This wasn't really about "exclusion"; it was about "inclusion".

I'm glad I'm not the only who hates video. What kills me is that it's one of the major points of web 2.0... and I have no idea why.

Because some of us are lazy *******s who want to sit back double fisted with brewski's while listening to some dude jack his jaw about his widget instead of spending the energy to read what he has to say.

Also, I can tell if someone is a liar in video. In text, it's much tougher.

          Yeah. I'm totally sold.

That said, video works for information that is best communicated by video. If you're sitting back burping, swilling beer and stammering through your script don't expect me to sit through your blather. And I don't care about what your dog is up to.

I reviewed a certain WSO last year that had incomprehensible narration whilst the video consisted of 90 minutes of a nice, calm, static Google page. While the static video wasn't distracting, I was unable to understand the narration. In this case, someone took the message about video marketing and products a bit too far.

If you're worth reading, I'll read.

            Lol...JMO,
            You crack me up...lol...

I agree that some of us are indeed lazy at times an would rather
watch/listen to a video or audio although I also agree that people with
            disabilities shouldn't be left hanging.

I try to create a transcript for videos not only to appease the people that
need it but for the reason I some times find it easier to reference the info
when I can skim through it rather than have to fast forward through a
            video/audio and find it.

            Good Thread and Reminder, Thanks!

            Have a Great Day!

Nah. There exist text readers for blind users. Hence the protocol for accessibility (circa 1999) and the best practices therein.

Show me the text reader that can explain a graphic, describe a colour or a facial expression and I will grant you that point but, guess what, videos are used for more than 'talking head' presentations and the blind cannot get them transcribed into braille.

In the past three weeks I have seen offers for over 700 hours of video training and information - who has time for that?

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

700 hours... wow. That's a whole lotta yappin'. That's nearly 30 consecutive days of watching videos. Wouldn't information be outdated by the time a person made it through all of that? ha.

That takes the phrase "perceived value" a bit too far...

              Thanks for the input everyone

I've been thinking about this awhile too now.
There are some sales/squeeze pages with video and not much text on them. If i don't have time to view a video(that often doesn't display how long it is,even when playing) It puts me right off. If i truly am interested,i'll bookmark it-if i get back there.

Couple years ago i started the CIW certificate course. Part of it included standards coding and if i remember rightly, there are 2 or 3 laws that should be obeyed.
1 has something to do with child protection and the 2nd for those with disabilities.
sites with images are supposed have alt="" tag.
Strange how nothing is said about this and how videos have to comply with this law.

I've been thinking of including transcripts with video anyway.
Video is great if you got the time, but sometimes a pdf is better.

PS: it might not be a law as such. just a standard. if i can find what its called i'll come back and post/or update this post if i can.

I hate videos. I don't care if you want to add them as additional options and they're useful sometimes if you want to show something, but video only where the marketer just talks and talks and I run screaming for the X button. I'd much rather just read for the reasons outlined in the OP.

I have no love for videos but they do make it easier to explain techie stuff to newbies. The best way to do if you are going to have a video then have the text with it .. My members area offers video and text instructions both.

Also I have been playing with Keynote that comes with iWork 09 for Mac and I have created several videos, the output allows quicktime, ipod, pdf, html, ppt, or output as images. So in reality you could create a video and output the pdf or html for it at the same time..

What I done (and here is a sample) is create a video with the text.. Sure it got background music but no speaking.

(No the above is not self promotion, there is nothing for sell, or no website on that domain)...
