Should I Create An E-Book?

As I am deciding on my next venture, I am anxious to get to work on something as I keep having doubts (as a lot of us probably do before committing to a project).

The project I am most highly considering is related to fat loss.

Using a mixture of methods and based off of personal experience, I was able to lose 85 pounds and get down to 7% body fat in 10 months or so. I also have before and after pics, as well as a log of every single meal I ate for a whole year. As well as training logs with my weight lifting and cardio data for over 2 years.

I would love to make an authority site on fat loss. My aim is to provide my visitors with all of the info they will need to create their own customized regimen through free articles.

As for monetization, I really want to focus on Adsense, affiliate income, and perhaps my own ebook.

My question is this -

Would it be beneficial to go about this venture with the intentions of branding and creating my own ebook?

Or do you think it would be more profitable to monetize it through affiliate products?

Should I make this decision right now, before starting my site? Or should it wait, and depend on how everything is moving along?

I appreciate any advice....thanks!

Make a plan before you get started, it'll make everything a lot easier to decide on along the way.

I'd absolutely recommend creating at minimum your own ebook. You could even consider selling your entire meal plan as another upsell with maybe a case study or something like that about your own personal experience. I'd also recommend starting a paid membership site once you're ready for it.

I echo this suggestion. Over the years, I've found that it's much more beneficial to have your own products. That way YOU own the asset and the income.

Promoting aff products is cool, too; however, I would only consider that as extra income, in addition to your main product income.

I've just recently finished creating my first product a few months ago and I'm so grateful I did. My sales and conversion rates are MUCH higher than they were when I was pushing aff products and so are my profit margins.

If you start your website now, it's okay to start off with aff products as a way to initially generate income. However, I'd suggest that you be creating your ebook as you're building up your site and make it available for your audience to purchase asap.

Another upside to having your own products is the brand building and recognition that comes along with it. Not to mention the ability to generate even more income through recruiting your own affiliates to aid you in selling your ebook.

      Hope this helps you.

Wow, I had the exact same experience as you, and had the exact same idea a while back and even wrote an ebook about it that I used to give away as a freebie for email opt ins!

Probably a mix of all 3: adsense, affiliate products, and your own ebook. Your own ebook would probably be the best though because it makes you an authority quicker.

    FutureMarketer,

Like Victor Edson said, having a plan, you'll have a clear view of what's going on.
With your own eBook, you've full control over the marketing progress.

Thanks lattlay, I appreciate the advice.

Is the whole free product for opt-ins thing still efficient today? I'm curious to know, because I know that I've been a bit desensitized toward it over the years and wasn't sure if that was the concensus of the market, or just me.

Also, did you add affiliate links in the free book?

And finally, I understand that hot niches with loads of traffic are good to base authority sites around, but is the fat loss niche simply just too big now? Is there a certain point where niches should be avoided for being too competitive?

I plan on creating hundreds upon hundreds of quality articles on the site, so my gut is telling me that I'll be okay, but I still wanted to see what everyone else thinks.

    Thanks

I would recommend to start by writing an e-book or a video series. This way others will market your product for you. As where if you market other affiliate products, you have to compete with the other marketers.

    Hi Future Marketer,
Definitely, write your own ebook. You are a walking, talking example of weight loss. Tell everyone how you did it. Pick an intriguing title by grabbing the attention of people who want to lose weight.
How did you lose all that weight? Please, don't tell me :-). Make people buy your ebook to find out how you did it. It will probably be a huge success.
    Good luck!

First there is no competition. Did you read "the science of getting rich" by Wallace Wattles. Competition is for gigantic companies and does not apply for us. Many do not go into weight loss because they hear it is over done. Consider this: email swaps. There is an abundance you can do with them alone. Thousands of swaps = $$$$$

Second if you create your own ebook you will have the best traffic source. You can have an army create the traffic for you.

Third and most important. Create and multiply your email list.

Lear how to make a funnel.

Create something free to give away that will entice people to give you their email address.

There is without a doubt a market for this and everyone keeps talking about an army of affiliates, etc... But what no one is telling you is you have to be an exceptional marketer so if I where in your shoes I would look to team up with a marketer as a partner on this project.

Not just any kind of marketer, rather one that is already in this particular market. One that is established and has a solid customer list. You have the story and the proof, they will bring the experience of marketing to this type of crowd to move you light years ahead of your competition quicker than what you could do on your own having to learn the ropes of marketing.

Too many people worry about profits when they bring a partner into the mix but I'd rather have 5% of thousands of sales as opposed to 100% of a few sales if you even get that far.

You have to think strategy and the very best way in my book is to take on a partner for this project.

My advice is to do all three at once. Set up your site with the materials you have written about here. Write the book as your posts. In other words, instead of doing two things seperately, just write very detailed posts. When you have enough posts, turn them into your ebook. What I have found is that it makes you write more thoughtful posts. And of course, you can add links to affiliate products in the articles which will follow you to the book. You can even give the book away on Kindle for free with the affiliate links included to really cash in.

Hey man, first of all congrats on the transformation, being a fitness freak myself I know the commitments it take to get where you want to be.

Now the business side, If I was in your shoes I would count myself very lucky, you have gone through the whole experience and you can use that to your advantage.

1 - Create YOUR OWN product, why do all the hard work and make someone else money?
I'd go with creating a free ebook for the lead capture page, Diets as an upsell could work fine but I;d rather go with some sort of membership site, different level clients get access to different products.

Becasue you have kept such an extensive log of everything you already have your content created for you so most of the hard yards have already been put in.

So as a rough Idea you can go for:

1 - Ebook as free offer
2 - Membership site with different levels(level 1 - only diets, level 2 - diets and workouts, level 3 custom fitness plans for clients, but you get the idea)

Or you can ofcourse bundle it all up and sell as a once off through a sales funnel.

    Good Luck

You could purchase some PLR content and be selling it within a few minutes but chances are most of it will be sub par quality. Although I have heard of people making a few $k off plr ebooks.

Your method sounds unique so create an ebook and market it to affiliates.

Sounds like a great idea and as many already have mentioned, creating your own e-book is a good starting point. Then giving it away in return for their email address would be beneficial for both parties.

Wow! I sort of cringe when people talk about giving away a book they've written for free unless it is on Kindle and is for a short period and part of your marketing plan. I don't know, maybe it's just the writer in me, lol!

I also recognize that you need to give value to your readers/clients.

That being said, how about giving away a portion of your book for free, a few of your secrets/methods and then offering your complete book for sale if they wanted to learn more?

Most definitely create an E-book or series of videos. You will become an authority in this area and have the ability to become a guru. Think about it, would you much rather read a book by someone who actually walked the walk or someone that heard about it and never did it themselves.

Yes, I think you should if you think you can provide great values. Next you have to tie up with affiliates and so on.

Unless you're giving the ebook away to build a list I wouldn't recommend it. An ebook is a little to low-end in today's market. You'll have to create an actual program with videos, digital manuals, etc. to give it a higher perceived value.

First of all you should promote affiliate products related to your main topic and learn how to sell them online. After understanding how everything works you will create a better ebook.

You will also have the chance to build an email list by selling affiliate products. When your ebook will be ready you will promote it to this email list of buyers, since it was built by selling related products.

Wow. I see all these great well meaning replies offering advice, but they might be putting you crook.

You CAN'T do it all yourself. The amount of work you are talking about doing here is just so immense that unless you're some kind of superhuman you won't be able to do it all yourself.

Writing hundreds or articles, adswaps, ebook creation, marketing your ebook, creating your site, graphics etc, And then there's SEO and driving traffic to your site...And the list is going to go on and on once you get started.

Here's my plan for you. If you've got time on your hands to commit to this and you follow these steps you could be making money in a few weeks from now.

    Here goes.

Pick one of these options that you enjoy the most. It seems that your passion is to create an ebook / weight loss program?

Fantastic. Write a really awesome ebook about weight loss with lots of nice before and after pics etc. Make sure it is nice and easy to read and not too long. Something that the average person could read in about 20-30 mins. Definitely just one sitting.

Put awesome info in there and make it all about YOU. Tell them your story. Your motivations, your fears etc etc What kept you going and now how it feels to be living your dream weight and having loads of energy etc

Keep the diet plans out as something up your sleeve.

This book should only take a week or so max to write.

At the end of the ebook you will have a link back to a squeeze page where you will be giving away the "EXACT diet plans and training programs you used to lose 85 pounds and get down to 7% body fat in just 10months"

Now you will need to find as many people as possible who want a copy of your free book.

I've got 2 options for you:

Only choose one of them. And persist with it until you have mastered it.

    1. Give it away in forums. There are loads of weight loss forums out there so go and create posts in all of them saying how you have written a new ebook about your weight loss story and you are giving it away for a short time so you can get feedback on it. There should be no optin when people download your book.

    2. Make a list of weight loss blogs who are collecting subscribers and receiving plenty of monthly views - technorati is the best site to find other sites in your niche.

Approach them all with a personalized email and tell them about your ebook. Tell them how you love their blog and want to GIVE IT AWAY to everyone on their list. You are giving the ebook away without an optin.

Now all the people read through the ebook and get to the end (make sure it's not too long and also easy and fun to read) and they see they can follow a link to get your free plans.

You have built up so much trust by the time they have read your whole book that of course they will go to your site and enter their email address to get your info.

NOW you have a highly targeted list of subscribers who are desperate to lose weight and you find a clickbank product that you like and feel good to be promoting and then you email your list about it and tell them how awesome it is.

BOOM you make alot of money!

Now you send out regular newsletters with new recipes and tips in and occasional affiliate offers.

OK - this turned out to be way longer than I expected. I hope it's useful.

    Good luck
