Battle Rap or Lack of Fat?

I am about to set off on a long venture, and I've got it narrowed down to 2 passions.

One is extremely underground, and niche. It is battle rap. I simply love watching it. There are tons of leagues, lots of known names, lots of controversy, etc. However there is no real main authority site about it. And building one would be so much fun! (Passion for topic, less knowledge, more fun, less market)

The other is, well, fat loss. Perhaps on the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of its vastness. I'd have to say that I have more personal knowledge and experience in this area, too. Not to mention a personal testimony which I can create into an e-book based on over a year of data, tracking, and charting. (Passion for topic, more knowledge, less fun, larger market)

However the goal is the same...the creation of an authority site around whichever topic I choose.

So before I make that final decision and choose a topic, can anyone help me determine if battle rap is a worthy niche?

The goal is to ultimately earn a 6 figure income from either site.

Thank you!

I'd think so, considering how many people are interested in rap.

At the same time- you have to think about how you'll monetize it. I suppose you could be an affiliate for music like CDs, and if you're able to interview experts/professional artists, maybe you could sell the MP3s and transcripts.

Yeah, I was also considering that there are definitely e-books to teach people how to create rap lines for battles and such. And then of course ads selling microphones, recording software, etc.

      Thanks for the reply!

    Hey FutureMarketer

Great niche - battle rap! I have not idea what it is but it does sound fun. The question is, how can you make enough money? Think about how you might make money from this niche first and do some projections. Do people buy battle rap DVD's? Can you sell them? Or have a subscription service say $20 a month to get a new dvd each month? (Assuming you can get the rights). Are there other ways to make money from the niche offline or online?

The battle rap idea would be fun. You could run contests and stream live battles via skype or gotomeeting or something like that. Put up a little cash for the contest winners to get people coming to sign up for the competition.

If you could get the traffic to support it you could even have live voting for the people watching. For example, person A is battling person B. All of the onlookers are watching them on webcam and can click 'like' or 'oooohhhhh' or whatever when the rapper says something clever. Whoever has the most likes wins $100. You would need a way to cap it so people couldn't vote too many times but it would be awesome if you could work out the details.

Run the contest once a month to build hype and charge them a small fee to join the battle. Every rapper tosses in $10 for the chance to win $100 or $1000 or whatever you can afford based on how many people compete.

With fat loss you'll be one website among thousands, needing to battle (no pun intendend) your way against tough and established competition.

With battle rap, according to what you posted, you'll be THE go to website. And as you said it's not a niche where products to sell and promote are missing: from actual music (iTunes etc) to music equipment, from tickets to apparel (and I'm guessing some of that bling bling can be quite expensive ;-) ...it feels to me like rap has lots of accessory ways of making money...

Withouth checking any "niche numbers" it's obvious that rap (and related music, like hip hop etc) has a huge following... probably big enough to make it decently profitable.

Given the option, I would choose the niche with less competition - i.e. battle rap in your case. But again, I'm writing just based on a gut feeling, I haven't checked any "niche numbers"...

    good luck!
