Hi

Microsoft has made the Windows 7 Release Candidate available to the general public today. Both the 32 and 64 bit versions are available for download.

Windows 7 Release Candidate Customer Preview Program

This version will run until July 1, 2010.

These are big downloads, about 3 GB each (although most of us will only need one version). The system requirements are about the same as Vista.

Thanks for the heads up....sadly since it's likely to be as bloaty as Vista I'm going to pass on playing with this one. I'm even considering completely switching to Mac as a result of the recent blunders from MS. I'm happy with anything from win2k pro to XP...to various flavors of *nix (ubuntu for easy installs)... I'm not really an anti-MS guy, but Vista seriously p*ssed me off.

Vista pissed everyone off, that's why MS rushed to W7.

I know some tech people that were saying how strangely workable this version is, BUT it's still a "Release Candidate" NOT the final version yet.

Looks pretty good but then you read the clause: ( Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours.)
Will stick with XP until a stable version of something better comes out. Cheers though.

The 32-bit version is 2.35 GB now that it's downloaded. I think that is less than half the size of the vista dvd. But there is still more work to do. Here are the instructions to create a bootable dvd from the file.

" The RC download is an ISO file, which you'll need to burn onto a blank disc before you can install it. To do that, you'll need to use software designed for burning ISO files.

In addition to commercial ISO burning software, there are free programs such as ISOBuster and Active ISO Burner. To find one, go to a site such as Download.com or Tucows and search for "ISO," "DVD," and "burn".

Follow the instructions that came with your program to create a Windows 7 RC installation disc. "

So I went to download.com and got the best rated free software. Installed it and tried to burn the download to a bootable dvd, and get the message that the free version will only burn up to 300 MB, but cough up $30... How to hit a guy when he's down.

So unless any of the technical guys do know of free software that will handle this I'm just going to park it for now. I'm too busy to download something else and then find out the fine print doesn't cooperate. (Marketers!)

Use a USB stick and set your BIOS to boot from USB.

You must be one of the lucky ones...

My Vista box used to shut down for no apparent reason at least once or twice a day...then one night I let Windows do an update while I went to sleep...woke up in the morning and it had turned itself into a paperweight. Lost a ton of data Had to pay to get it reformatted & reloaded... and now consider it basically a toy for my kid.

Wow I have never heard of that one.

If an OS gave me that problem, I would just run it from a virtual machine so it didn't effect the other parts of the system.

Device support and backward compatibility have not been smooth for lots of people. DRM (Digital Rights Management) that was built-in took 20% of the O/S overhead.

If W7 is faster, one reason is because of the forced DRM backlash MS got because of it.

You can't say Vista is bloated and offer Ubuntu as an alternative

installed (upgraded) yesterday. So far, so good. Running W7 beta as my main OS for some months already. I used an "inofficial" hack to upgrade from W7beta to RC.

Sean, I am really sorry to hear the troubles you gone through with Vista. I have tried Vista and I still have it on one of my pcs. Many friends have it too and I didn't hear about such problems until now. I must admit, the way I see it: You are amongst the unlucky ones.

That's nothing new. I thought all PC's did that on a regular basis. LOL
