Trouble with s3 Video hosting for dial-up internet users?

I'm trying to host some videos using S3 and flowshield. The problem is that the vids are high quality and anyone with a slow connection has to wait an hour just to watch 5 minutes. Is there some way to make it easier to be viewed by slower connection viewers while still maintaining high quality vids? Youtube has the option of different resolutions but I can't host on youtube because I want to protect my private content...

I haven't even launched yet but sent out to 5 people to view and give me feedback. Only 4 watched and 1/4 had the issue. I reduced the video size to 1/3 of what it was but he went back and still had a problem. He said he could watch youtube videos barely. I can see a lot of people having dialup that purchase the product because many would live in the country.

    So 1 person?

    What country?
    How many subscribers?
Can you offer a physical product at a higher price and send it out on CD?

Just one person out of 5 but that is all I have sent it to. I have no subscribers yet because I haven't launched. Basically I just finished the product and sent it to 5 people that are loyal followers of my youtube channel just to get their feedback. I live in the US but really don't want to mess with physical cd's as I am lazy and really like more passive income =)

Less than 10% of Internet users have dial-up. Don't waste 90% of your time on 10% of your potential market. Really any video solution is going to be less than ideal for dial-up. Focus your energy on the right things.

I think the % might be much higher with my niche because a lot of them live in rural areas. I don't want to be losing money and refunding half my audience if there is a solution

        Dude, one person complained.

I offered a viable solution and you said you were "too lazy".

Instead of asking here, find out what the numbers really are - and make a calculated decision based upon that.

Sending hard copy disks for an online product isn't a viable solution. Besides, the original question was about making Amazon s3 videos easier to view for those with a slow internet speed. The question wasn't weather I should mess with it or not...

If you know a large part of your target market will have the issue.. you could offer a download version. It'll take a while to download, yes. But if they paid for it.. they'll be happy to know they can download and watch it instead of not being able to watch it.

That's a pretty passive way to handle it... you basically leave it up to them and provide what they need to make it happen.

That's great advice but really don't want to let people download the videos. It's one of those "secrets" products and it could end up shared very easily. I thought about uploading to youtube and making the vids private. Then if someone complains I could just add their email to the vids but youtube only allows 50 emails to be added. Might have to create a whole new member area with very low def vids for the dial up users...

    1. If video size is an issue then either break them up into smaller videos or reduce the quality of the videos a little.

    2. Not letting your users download the videos doesn't stop sharing. If people want to share your content they will do it regardless. There are plenty of programs that record online videos as you watch them.

Personally I would just let people download the videos. I always have and never have any issues. Members much prefer being able to download the videos they have paid for.

      @Victor & Will

Thanks for the advice. I'm starting to think this may be my best option. Do you offer 100% money back guarantee for you products? If so what keeps people from purchasing, downloading all the videos/content, then getting the money back? I guess I figured if I have the ability to remove their access they can't just buy it and rip it then get a refund. I know camtasia, snagit and other screen recorders can easily record the vids but most people don't know about software like that.

        Victor.

But how is that different from someone joining, watching all your videos online, and then refunding. They have still gotten your information for free, right?

The best thing to do is to NOT build your business around the refunders but instead build your business around your loyal paying customers. Don't make it harder for them just for the sake of a few serial refunders who would probably still refund your product regardless.

Just focus on creating the best possible user experience for those who have paid. It's all you can do and the more you concentrate on that the more people will want to buy your product.
