How does an email series differ from a blog post?

Are there any key differences between writing an email series and blog posts?

Any insights are appreciated!

An email series should focus a little more with creating an emotional connection with people that encourages them to open your emails. You can use any kind of integrated storytelling to accomplish that emotion.. if they want to open your emails in the beginning... they'll likely be more likely to open your emails long term too.

Blog posts on the other hand should encourage people to sign up to your email list. First by providing quality content and then a call to action to optin.

Content emails usually aren't as media right either. You can make a video or something, but most times it's just a plain text email.

Write a blog post that has valuable free content inside it.

Send your list an email getting them over to your blog post.

This is known as the triangle of trust.

    Both are similar.

Email messages tend to have a little worse grammar than regular blog posts as they give you personality.

Email messages are also normally shorter blocks of text compared a blog post.

I mean...it's all content...it's just a matter of how you package it and market it...

I do believe it is all content, but I can guarantee you, the blog posts will pull in alot less money than the emails will. I do not use blogs like that any longer, I do have blogs and use them but not on a personal level. I do use those blogs to collect emails though.

I don't think it should be looked at as just one or the other. If all you do is send promotions to your list then they'll likely get sick of opening your emails because they see no value add. But if you provide valuable content only emails every now and then, it keeps them wanting to open your emails.

The best place to provide content only is on a blog, for two reasons. First of all, most people are going to see an email as being promotional because that's what they are used to. Emails = promotions. Even if your email is content only, they will still initially have the feeling it is just a sales pitch.

But we have been conditioned to see blogs and news sites as informational and not promotional. So just sending them a short email telling them to check out your new blog post will get them in a different frame of mind where they are expecting good information rather than pitch.

The second reason for using a blog is for social proof. If all you do is send out promo emails to your list then they never get to see you interacting with other people. For that reason they have no idea how popular or unpopular you actually are. They could be the only person on your list or they could be 1 of 50,000 people on your list, they have no way of knowing.

But when you send people over to a blog, everyone gets to see the comments that are left and the interaction between you and your subscribers and it allows them to see that others are following you and it's worth their time to follow you also.

I know of someone who does exclusive email content courses that only the subscribers see (in an autoresponder series). There are benefits to that, especially if they can't get that content elsewhere so they have to sign up and read the emails to get the content.

Those are good points though. Personally I like to see interaction and Q and A's following content post, and if they're long they are easier to read on a site and can be better combined with relevant photos and video also.

There is more intimacy to email though. Instead of it being a social thing of other feedback and interaction, it feels like they're talking just to you. Both are good when used right.

Oh I agree...email to a targeted list will almost always outperform some blog posts...unless it's a massively popular blog to begin with...

In the beginning I couldn't differentiate email messages from blog posts and I was simply sending my articles to my email lists, but later I realized that an email message can be more promotional. A blog post mainly gives information about important matters to the public.

In an email message you can talk about the quality of your products and other things that you cannot publish at your blog without being considered too promotional.

Your subscriber is closer to you than a blog reader. A blog reader may be reading your words for the first time, but your subscriber is someone who already knows you and your work.

When writing an email series I try and connect to my audience more, I also give away more value in the newsletter emails because those people have signed up to my list.
