Why are you wasting time writing a post when you could be solving the problem?

WARNING - Possible hypocritical post of the year follows...

Maybe I've allowed myself to become more aware of this issue, but there appears to be a steady flow of posts, particularly in the Main Forum, that are just moaning about a minor problem, attempting to get more folk involved, creating needless discussion and not actually dealing with the issue and getting on with life.

Now, I can see the risk I'm running here by appearing hypocritical by posting this very thread, but I also see value by alerting some people to their time-wasting ways. At the very least we can help reduce pointless posts by not getting involved, not even to ridicule, but simply by ignoring.

Most of the time it doesn't seem necessary to me for the post makers to be alerting the wider community of their problem, it's not adding value and not really serving any purpose other than to boost post count or increase personal exposure.

This unnecessary activity is not just confined to new members of the forum, it is a tact used by members with many thousands of posts too. These posters are more often than not more than capable of solving their little problem all on their own and it quite often such an insignificant issue it really isn't worth alerting the rest of us.

Sometimes the content of the posts on this place reminds me of the calls you get to a two-bit radio show phone-in and the ensuing 'conversations' are no better.

I'm not naïve enough to not know that this is a minor issue in itself and probably will never go away, but maybe we could make a small dent in the percentage of useless posts.

There you have it - the result of a 5 min coffee break that maybe should have been spent doing some work.

    Peter,

In the sprit of finding a solution...

There's a report button on every post, if you
feel that any post is inappropriate, then use
    the report button.

If enough people agree with you, the post will
    automatically be deleted.

It's a social thing - like hanging around the water cooler or having a fag break - When I had a normal job there were always people huddling in groups and moaning about how bad things were, whether it was work or their life, or even other people - some people aren't happy unless they're complaining about something.

Cook it for awhile in some nice butter or olive oil and you might be onto something!

        Doh!,

I only just returned from the US last weekend so I should've remembered.

It's amazing how quick I slipped back in to my UK speak

LOL, well we all knew you were a gay fellow anyway...

Okay, now I'm done... I am out of double meaning words for this thread.

          -Michael

PS For any non-native English speakers here...

fag = cigarette (have you ever seen someone die of lung cancer... I have... not pretty... sorry, had to add that)

          queer = weird or odd

gay = happy (not often used anymore that way here, but at one time)

Of course, they all have other sometimes much more popular meanings... which may depend on where you are... which I wont get into here.

I think if you would have had a signature link then
it would have been hypocritical. Much less without
    the sig link.

    John,

A lot of the time they're not breaking any specific rules, (unless being pointless is against a rule I'm not aware of) so they don't fall within the realms for reporting. However, I know I could use the function more often, especially for unsubtle self-promotion.

    Andy,

You're right, it's the office cooler mentality. Some of these thread starters are quite manipulative, stirring up a conversation for their own gains, an activity not unknown within the office gossip circles. They're almost like passive/aggressive forum trolls.

    Justin,

The signature will remain absent from my replies too.
