Hey guys,

I recently purchased a domain, and am going to use my friend's host to put the website online. It allows unlimited add on domains, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to use it. I have added the domain, but the url still directs me to the main website. The only way I've figured out how to access the website is through my friend's website, which is urlhere.com/myurl.com, but I want to be able to access my website simply with myurl.com. What information would I be able to provide for you to help me with this? I have contacted the help services, but sometimes they take up to several days to respond, and if I can get it working before then, then it'd be great!

Thanks.

Have you changed the name servers on your domain site CP?

How would I go around doing that? Also, would that effect his website? I want the websites to be completely separate as they are both two completely different niches.

I don't want to do anything with his website which could potentially screw his website up.

Totally understand where you're at right now. I asked some techie friends for help trying to get started, you end up with a lot of maybes and if this is set like this then try this. guesswork really. What helped me the most was diving in to the hosting sites help and tutorial areas and contacting their specific customer service with questions. They know best what is going on with their hosting. After I went with this strategy I picked hints up fairly quick. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

Hm, surely there is one specific way which I could get my website up and running, right? I don't want to go out and purchase new hosting if I don't need to (not saying that it was what you were suggesting).

Well off the top of my head it sounds like it might be that you need to make your own folder for that domain on the hosting account. If you read and retread their guides/tutorials and still have questions I'd try their 800 number hats what I did when I'd get stuck and had tried several routes. If frustrating at first bit you ll get their if you put in the time and study for lack of a better word

Well, I did follow their tutorial, but it doesn't (at least for me) allow me to view my own domain. I suppose if I don't get one specific answer from someone on here, I might have to wait for them to respond.

IN your friends Cpanel you have added the addon domain such as 12345.com correct?

Once you have done this you can then register the domain and here you need to make sure that the DNS servers are pointing to your cpanel nameservers such as ns1.hostgator.com and ns2.hostgator.com. This should then ensure that your site is working?

I can guarantee the add on domain is correct. I have already registered the domain (did this before anything). How do I do the next part?

Bear in mind this is all relatively new to me, generally I'd just get free hosting.

Don't quite understand where you're at at present but:-

    1. You've purchased your Domain
    2. Change the Name Servers to point to your Hosting A/C
    3. Use the 'Add On Domain' setting to actually add your Domain to your Friends server.
    4. Do you want to use WP on this Domain - go to Fantasico in Cpanel and add WP.
    5. You will have a new WP Site - and if you add your Email WP will send you complete details of your site.
    6. You will then be able to Login to your Site and begin building the type of site you're after.

    Hope this helps!

There are great Video Tutorials in Hostgator and you could also try YouTube - there is not much that isn't featured there!

    Good Luck

You need to sign in to your domain name registrar where you bought your domain and search for the option to change your name server from your registrar to your friend's web hosting. After changing the server, it may take up to 24 hours for the server to be changed.

    Hi Complexity,

If you registered (purchased) your Domain you will automatically have Name Servers which point to the site you purchased on >>> Example I am with Hostgator but I buy/register all my Domains with Namecheap >>> I then get Nameservers which point to Namecheap!

So I want my Domain Name to point to Hostgator so I need to change my Nameserver on the Namecheap Site in my A/C to point to my Hostgator Name Servers!!

Are you with me so far???

I think it would be so much easier for you to get your own Hosting A/C - you can get a full month on Hostgator for $1.00 - after that your Hosting will cost you approx. $8.00 mth - ish!!!

You will then have your own Hosting A/C and all the Video Tutorials at Hostgator to take you through every step of the way.

I think this will be a far easier option for you.

You can also purchase/register your Domain at Hostgator and then to my knowledge you won't have to worry about changing the Nameservers! It might cost you a little more but less trouble for you at present!

My honest opinion is that you would be wise to take a week or two out to check out all the Video Tutorials at Hostgator before you start - to my knowledge I don't think you need an A/C to do that!

Hope that is of a little help to you - you really need to understand the basics so head over to Hostgator and watch the Tutorials. (No Affiliate Links Here - but Hostgator is really your best bet!)

    Good Luck!
