Setting up a Payment Acceptance System

Uptil now I have been doing affiliate sales.
I am now in the process of launching my own product.
I plan to have a wordpress site with the optimize press 2 theme when it comes out.
My question is - how does payment processing of credit cards work? Do I need to contact someone like paypal? What software/plugin allows me to do this? (I want it look just like the payment page of clickbank products)
Note: I am looking to add a membership option as well, hence would like to know how to create payment followup instructions such as thank you page and e-mails with subscription usernames & password.
