The real reason for Gmail's new tabbed layout...

...is to start showing AdWords ads directly in your e-mail list, as if the ad was an unread mail.

The cost per click Google earns has been dropping for a long time now (down 6% in 2012, another 2% in Q1 2013). The only way Google can maintain its revenue when CPC is going down is to have a higher volume of clicks... so they're showing more ads in more places.

Do you have a source for this? Or is it your own speculation? Or did a janitor who works at Google tell you this?

Do you not see the screenshot of it in my post? It's already been rolled out.

It wasn't there 20 minutes ago when I made that post because the image was uploaded 15 minutes ago (as of the time I wrote this) according to imgur. Now that it's there, it's obvious that your post is not just speculation or a rumor from a Google janitor.

Personally, I think this is GREAT. I think most people are going to be so annoyed at the stupid ads they have to look at that they will turn off the Promotions tab all together. That means our email broadcasts end up back in Priority.

The image was there from the start. I rehosted it from Twitter to imgur after you posted thinking you may have been blocking Twitter's CDN for some reason; I guess you were.

I thought the same thing, already saw some ads that appeared to look like unread emails or messages, I just went to my settings and got rid of those extra tabs, they suck.

Yeah I left the new tabbed layout on for a day, thats it. Besides the annoying in-line advertisements, it's harder to leave unread emails in your inbox and later view them. As with this new layout unread messages do not stay at the top.

I use my GMail for my business, the filters and labels literally act like a secretary LOL, when they add new stuff like that it just makes it more complicated and annoying. If they want to update GMail, they should add filter signatures, if the filter is triggered, it drops the appropriate signature. That would be cool.

Yeah, f*** Google for trying to monetize the reliable free email service that they provide. We must stop them from putting crap ads on the email service that we didn't pay a dime for!

You don't have to use Google's web interface to access GMail. You could always use your own desktop or webmail client if you don't like the ads they place there.

Besides, I think it would be rather difficult to organize such a "clickout". And even if you did succeed in getting a large number of GMail users to protest in this way, I wouldn't think it would be difficult for Google to discern these fraudulent clicks from normal activity.

I am sorry to say that, but in my opinion no "professional" or someone who uses gmail for business uses the web-interface of gmail.

I myself use Thunderbird (or outlook for those who prefer outlook) and pull emails from Gmail via POP3. (You enter the server settings and your account information in Thunderbird). I never see nor use any web-interface for my email.

      I don't know about that.

POP and IMAP access are some of the best features of GMail. Alot of email providers offer such access as a paid upgrade.

I prefer not to use Thunderbird though. Instead I use fetchmail to retrieve mail once every minute from many different email accounts on GMail and other email providers, then I'm able to access any of those aggregated email messages from a single account and single sign on using my choice of webmail clients. I use roundcube for that.

Turned it off. It's good Google consistently innovate and improve their software. However, it's also good that they listen to customers and allow you to opt out.

It's funny how people here will jump all over someone for "whining about marketers marketing", yet when a free service adds another monetization stream, they go nuts.

The ads are identified as ads. If "some people" are too stupid to not recognize them as ads, that's their problem.

I'm getting pretty disgusted over all the whining about a business trying to make money.

If you want to talk anti-trust in search, we can have a conversation. But this? Give me a break...

    Correlation =/= Causation.

It could certainly be a reason; doesn't mean that it is the reason. As I've said elsewhere: Google does what is going to keep it the most profitable and most used at any given moment. Between Internet Marketer X and the brain trust at Google I know who I'm leaning towards when it comes to having their finger on the pulse of search engine/email platform users.

That's important to realize. Obviously, a tabbed layout is not required to display the ads OP mentioned. Many times, multiple new features are rolled out simultaneously, but that's not to say that Feature A is the reason for Feature B... etc.
