Don't you LOVE the new Gmail Tabbed layout? Your Opinion please?

I was just curious as to how many of us are keeping the new Gmail Tab setup and how many are not? If enough people reply it could give us some useful insights for our email marketing. I personally went straight back to the original inbox display.

I'm keeping it for now but just for research purposes.

There's no definite pattern to the criteria that GMail
uses to filter autoresponder e-mails into the Promotions
      tab.

For example, some autoresponder services that have a
clear unsubscribe link are still getting into the inbox -
whilst others are getting filtered into Promotions.

And with some autoresponder services like Infusionsoft,
some of their e-mails land in the Primary Inbox and some
go straight into the Promotions tab.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

Hey thanks for the feedback Shaun. I didn't think it would be cut and dried (not google's style) as to how they do it and your testing confirms that.

I highly suspect that the content of the email will play a large role as to which tab it it placed in. I imaging if there's no clickable link in the email that would give the highest chance of it going to the primary inbox. That would not neccessarily be a bad thing, it would just mean more thought going into our communications and if our subscribers want to see our emails then we can teach them how to make sure they do.

These tabs have being created as a part of the new revenue stream for Google, see the discussion here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6068873
It's very unlikely that Google will roll it back.

Agreed, but the user can go back to the original layout through their gmail settings. I suspect many existing users will not like it - if only because of a natural tendency to resist change.

I don't think it was a natural tendency to resist change for me, I think it was just the fact that it didn't help me out in anyway, nor did it make using GMail easier, to me, it just added more crap that I was uninterested in using LOL.

Fair comment! Whatever the reason, so far we've got 92% who are going back to the original inbox. Ok, we're are all in the MMO niche (as in that's what we do or want to do) - but then so are most of our subscribers. It would be good to get a higher volume of votes though for a more meaningful result.

I mean, this might be totally awesome to a few people, but for me it just ads clutter. I like setting up new filters to catch spam and get it out of my inbox, really want to see some more features added to their filters and labels.

Yep, also because most people who even care enough to open this thread are the vast minority of email marketers, let alone email users in general.

Yes, many of us are primarily email marketers, but there are also many who aren't yet. Irrespective; to say we're not email users in general is not true. Do you not recieve personal emails? Do you not care how they're presented to you and how easy or difficult it is to find them? And it's not just about finding personal emails, people recieve emails from many different sources and so to people on this forum.

If you look at some of the previous replies you'll find people have already talked about their own personal preferences and that is what this thread is all about.

That information can then be potentially useful or insightful to those of us that are also email marketers.

Interesting thought Julius. You know, I changed it back the original layout straight away, just like a few of the other posters here and for similar reasons. But.... as a marketer, I've just decided to change back to the new layout for a variation on what you are suggesting.

What I'm curious to know, is which marketers emails are getting into my Primary tab! What is different about their emails that helped them manage such an amazing feat! Now maybe I can really learn something.

YES. Chances are that most of the people who clicked NO are list builders and affiliate marketers but thinking from a customer point of view, it helps me focus on whats working NOW without going after the next big thing.

Trust me, if you are providing real value to your customers and subscribers they WILL OPEN your emails and BUY your products no matter what .

Looking at the answers here, they are pretty much ALL from the customers point of view - after all, we are all Gmails customers! And we will decide how we want our emails organised.

However, the more I think about it, the more I think list builders and affiliate marketers should be clicking yes! Especially if they want more insight into how some promotional emails are managing to get into the Primary tab.

You got it Clever - I'm already starting to understand how some promotional emails are getting into the Primary tab. I'm on many marketers lists and I have a large inbox of emails to sort through each day. I'm noticing that 99% of marketers are absolutely dumped into the Promotions tab - fighting it out for attention in a crowd of 'noise'.

But there's a few that have made it into my primary tab. There are obvious differences with a couple of them and I can see how they got in there. And there's a couple that I'm still trying to figure out. But I'm getting a pretty good idea.

The marketers who work this one out will leave their competition in the dust!

I am keepıng the new gmaıl tap setup and ıts totally accurate.
All promotion coming to promotion tab .
Social mails are coming to socail tab , and my personal and working email come to primary.I didint think it will heart the email marketing 100 percent (for current time ) , as i am still checking all my mail even social and promotion . (because i have habit to mark all my email as read). mostly people do.
But it heart the email marketing to 20 to 30 percent because the interest of clicking these promotional email is changed for me now days before the new tab setup i really want to checked whats in the email ,but now some time i clicked just to marked as read and some time to check really whats in the email.

  • I use it from Entourage with Pop3, so I think that the tabs have no importance for who uses external email software.

And for who uses it, that means they are not interested at all in mailing and promotions, I think. I'm happy to see the news on the market, so why leaving tabs active?

This is just my point of view on this

Thanks so much and see you soon,
