Phone verification requirements

Hi,

I couldn't find this after a WF search. Some services, such as Google and Hubpages, require a phone number to verify the account. I really don't want to open my personal phone for sales calls. Can anyone tell me -

- does providing a phone number to these types of services open up your phone to spam calls and/or textts?

- is there an alternative way to get a phone number to provide them?

Just trying to avoid one more business expense as I get started here.

Thank you!

As far as I know, sites like Google, hubpages will never share your personal phone number with anyone. I am sure that it's safe!

I also find it not conformable to verify accounts with phone numbers. This might open up your phone number for Spam calls and other nuisance stuffs.
Not safe at all and i wouldn't go for it unless its the only option
    Thank you

As far as Hubpages goes I cannot say. I've never opened an account with them.

    On Google though:

-If you give them your phone number it doesn't seem like they use it for marketing purposes at least. How they store it and what they do with it though, that's a bit more ambiguous. You have to weigh your own risk/reward list to decide if you want to do that (although I doubt Google and the NSA really cares about what you're doing).

-That being said, I've also found that you can still get around the phone number requirement at registration by registering on a different machine/IP address. Right now it looks like they require the phone number when it looks like the same person is creating accounts, and this is probably to make sure that you're a human being. I have different Gmails for work, personal stuff, a YouTube channel, and to funnel spam from research.

From there they ask you to provide a phone number when you log in from time to time. There will either be a skip button (it's small), or you can refresh the page and your inbox will come up on the reload. If you really don't want to you should be able to avoid giving Google your phone number.

With a large company like Google or Hubpages, the goal isn't to get your phone number to use in the future - it's to have verfieid number that proves YOU are a real person.

Most of them can text you a confirmation number - these aren't people calling your number but an automated verification system.

I have more Google accounts than I can keep track of and only have phone verified one account for my Google Voice account.

Facebook and Craigslist use it to try to prevent multiple accounts by the same person.

It's quite difficult to get around it and I have never heard of the big companies using them for anything but verification.

      Thanks, everyone - very helpful!

BobTheBostonian, your idea worked for Google - I used another computer.

      Have a great weekend!

No, I have a suspicion it's just for the United States government's data mining.

Remember when only CraigsList and some other bottom-feeders did the whole PVA thing?

Then almost overnight (after how many years?) it became a requirement of Yahoo, Google, Facebook, and other implicated major players, even though it doesn't really deter spammers.

    Yeah, nothing off about that.

Not sure if this totally protects me, but I bought a phone number for verification purposes. Had it forwarded to my phone for the verification process, then unforwarded it.

They do not use your phone to send you offers or share with third parties. You can also read it and find out in their terms of use. The phone number is only to verify your account to make a strong security to prevent someone to hack your accounts. The messages that you will receive will only be verification code when you login from a different computer. I'm protecting my google, facebook and few important accounts with my phone number from years and never got any phone call or an offer.

The most important for me was that I realized, several times after I started to use phone verification method I had received verification code where someone was trying to access my account. This method has blocked the user to get access at my account. I had in the past lost some of my accounts where they had hacked it.

It's very useful for security and protection of your account.

Had the same issue with multiple Youtube channels! Didn't mind verifying accounts but couldn't understand why you had to verify each channel to allow advertising?

Try searching for Textplus. Unlimited verifications as far as I can tell.

There's an App for the iPad, probably for the PC as well.

As it's a virtual number type thing you won't get bombarded with 'rubbish' either!

      Cheers

    Just click: "Skip this step"

I do not have a phone to verify so I can't do this and they have never forced me to.

Larger companies typically use it for security and verification purposes, not to sell you services. People would get really mad if Google started cold calling the numbers provided. Just having a phone number opens you up to receive spam calls/texts.
