E-Commerce Domain Help.....

Hello everyone!

Ok so my mum owns a eCommerce website and she wants to build a new one on my server not on the server she has at the moment. Now her domain she has is .co.nz and she wants to get more international with the business.

Now to .com is taken for the domain we want. Now would you recommend .net .org .info what domain extension for a brand new international eCommerce website? What are your thoughts.

Thank you.
Cam

I would say stick with the .net, build it on your server and launch. Does she plan to keep or shut down the .co.nz? If she shuts it down make sure she does 301 redirects to the new site.

Frankly is she is a true ecommerce and is building her business whether it is .net won't be to big a deal since when people come in via, shopping comparison engines, PPC and social media, no one is overly concerned with the domain extention.

What I do ask though, is the .com in the same industry?

      Hi there.

Thank you for your reply. I am going to take your advice and advance on a .net domain.

The .com is some law firm here in NZ and has nothing to do with it. The .com version has been sold for the last 10 years and we have never been able to get a hold of it.

      Thank you.

Is it possible to rename the brand? It could be better in the long-run, if you're looking at an international e-commerce site. Reputation management is highly crucial - it can lose thousands of dollars.

The problem with having a person's ".com" taken is that a google search normally pulls out com domains in the serp page (with some exceptions). There is also the problem with customers randomly entering a ".com" and going to a completely different website.

Fire me a pm if you have a question. I build businesses and provide consulting. I do not do finance/money/internet marketing niches. Fitness, self-improvement and various others are welcome.

      Hi James.

Yea i understand what you say man, I have told this to my mum but she would rather keep the name, then go for the SERP rankings. It kills me man, i am telling you. All my websites are .com but she just doesn't want it.

      Thanks for the advice man.

Jeez, I totally understand that feeling when some clients do that too.

It's not just about SERP rankings - it's practically everything to do with reputation management. There's going to be some form of brand confusion in the less tech-savvy customers as well. If there are bad reviews about the law firm .com itself, it's going to affect your business.

While I highly recommend it, if you really can't, I might suggest just going for a net. Any TLD would do. I'd definitely not stop at there, because a .com is highly crucial for an online business. Once you grab hold of it, do a 403 redirect to the com domain. That should do the trick.

Also a .org will be an option.
A few years ago i have tested to create the same content for a .com and a .org domain and i always was first with .org domain.

.net sounds about right, probably the most used one on the internet after .com for e-commerce sites.

If I had to make a choice, I vote for .net. .org and .info are not suitable for ecommerce sites.
