Is it safe to use this niche?

I'm very interested in aviation and want to start a blog about becoming a pilot.

My keywords are searched 2900 times a month (exact search, two words) and have low competition. Searches are consistent all year round as well. I know EMD isn't relevant as much nowadays compared to a few years ago but my domain contains the two words plus an extra word, since the two words are taken. Just putting it out there to make sure it won't affect my rankings.

The reason I am asking if it's safe to use this niche is because it's not a fitness, lifestyle, self improvement, etc. niche, as everyone advises beginners to take.

I'm really interested in this niche but I'm worried I won't get as much traffic as I would from a bodybuilding blog, for example, a niche I am also interested in but not as passionate about.

Thanks.

If you are interested and is your passion, go for it. You will get tired of niches you are not interested. Trust me on this one. I started many projects and told to myself, I'll just do it even if I don't care about niche, but I dropped them after a while. There was no passion in them for me. Once I started doing the stuff I like, I sticked to them until I saw some nice results. I'm sure you will find a way to monetize your passion over time. So don't worry about traffic quantity. You will get quality. And as far as I know, getting pilot license is expensive, so maybe affiliating with some flight schools (or at least sell advertising for them on your site) could bring you a very nice amount in the end (:

I think people advise you to start a blog on fitness etc, is because it is at least intereting to you and easy to write.

However you said you were interested in avation. Go for it! You can easily become an authority site in that niche if you know your stuff, and probably make a lot of cash on the side. Remember, just because your keyword has 2900 searches a month, that doesnt mean thats all you are going to get. use long tail keywords to get that up to 10k a month!

Yeah, I'd say go for it. There is definitely money to be made in that niche and since you're intersted you'll likely create great content and learn a ton along the way as well. Looks to me like a win-win situation for you.

2900 searches is just enough to make me think about going into it, but not necessarily immediately taking the next step.

First, are the searches local or global? If it is global, stay away from it.
Is it a buyer keyword? Or perhaps, will the type of people you are sending want to learn more --insert niche here-- ?

Also, in google keyword tool, the competition bar is not for the competitive nature of the niche. It means that there is low competition for ad space in the niche.

If its what you love, go for it.

But, in all honesty, I would personally stay away from it. I just don't see the potential for sales in the aviation niche as a small website.

The searches are global but that's who my potential customers are. I'm not specifying a specific flight school in a country, for example.

It's not a buyer keyword. People would search the keywords for more information about the subject.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea, I would definitely give it a go and especially because it is a passion of yours - you will be much more motivated in it than other niches too!

You don't mention if or how you plan to monetize your blog. A small amount of traffic can still provide a substantial income if the money is there.

I can see ebooks to be sold, pilot training companies to be affiliated with, just off the top of my head.

I would guess a slice of pilot training fees would be significant.

Have you done any market research? Doing so should answer some of your questions.

I tell people all the time that there's a big world out there beyond the basic "desperate buyer" markets, or the "big three"-health, wealth, relationships.

Aviation easily falls into a category I call "obsessive buyer" markets.

Even within the "become a pilot" market, there are niches to explore.

There are two questions you would still need to answer, and only you can answer one of them:

Can you make money from this market?

      and

Can you make money from this market?

There is a need for everything. The fact that not many people go into this niche menas you can easily dominate it.

    So your question essentially is:

Should you get into a niche that you're interested in but that's harder to monetize or should you get into a niche that you're not so interested in but is easier to monetize?

If so, then my advice for you would be:

If your personal satisfaction is more important to you than making money, to go with your passion.

But if your priority nowadays is to achieve financial freedom, then go with the bodybuilding thing.

Yes, "how to become a pilot" is a very profitable niche. If it is something you are really passionate about -- I say go for it.

Many people actually wills say stay clear of the major niches like fitness -- but almost any niche is profitable as long as there are people already spending money in it.

You just need to find your unique way of selling information, or having a unique twist on the subject matter.

I've had an aviation blog for over a year now. It truly is my passion so I love doing it. Just finished a new one so we will see how that does. The blog was my test site. Lot's of hard work in the beginning for sure!

If competition is low, and your aviation blog is good, you may end up becoming an authority in your niche and doing very well. Also, search for other keywords in your niche with similar competition and base articles around them too. If you are passionate about aviation it will likely show and you should attract the right kind of interested readers. You can also take other steps to increase traffic. Add videos. Do internal and external linking. Social bookmarking, blog commenting, forum marketing, trackbacks, social media promoting etc. Forgive the pun, but with a bit of sustained effort your blog really could take-off and fly high!

As for bodybuilding. Lots of competition there. More ways to make money perhaps yet you would probably do best if you found a niche within a niche. Not just a 'bodybuilding' blog, there are so many, bodybuilding for men over 40, or bodybuilding for those on a budget etc. You might be best to capture a specific share of the market as mainstream bodybuilding sites would be extremely hard to compete against. Good luck!
