Email Subscribers or Twitter Followers?

Hi guys,

Which are you focusing more of your efforts on? Building a list or adding more Twitter followers?

IMHO, an email list is still way better. Many people don't delete their emails until they have at least scanned it. Twitter posts simply get buried beneath all other posts.

Emails usually are sent in "days" intervals. Twitter posts are posted in "minutes" or even "seconds" intervals.

Can anyone think of the advantages of Twitter followers over email subscribers?

Cheers,
Michael

I've been using twitter for about 5 months to grow my email lists quickly and easily. Long term I agree it's better to have a list than twitter followers as you're in control of your list.

How about a bit of both?? Why concentrate on one stream when you can easily have 2.

    Just a thought.

Most people use twitter to grow their email list. Very few people use their newsletter to build their twitter following. Obviously that happens, and you should do it, but email was here before twitter and will be here after twitter...

      I agree with Tyrus...
Email is here for the long haul.
Email is actually an internet protocal. Twitter is only a website, like youtube, etc.

Unless twitter catches on like RSS or XML where it needs it own special protocal, it may fade away... who knows.
      But email will not.

I like the idea of using twitter to answer people's questions and meet new folks and promote the list.

Its all fun stuff though huh.

I would say doing both is relevant. Use Twitter to attract people to your list. With Twitter, you have the opportunity to demonstrate your character and competence thus creating trust. If someone trusts you, the more likely they are to join your list and ultimately buy from you.

I know underground marketer Mark Ress has shared that he has made six figures from Twitter in a few months and continues to see success with it. Part of it has to do with the fact he gives so freely of himself and he isn't a pitchfest kind of marketer. His model is to give value and then give a lot more. Do the same and the rest follows.

Email all the way, for the following reasons:

#1 - You can segment e-mail subscribers (i.e. customers and non-customers). This provides relevance to the person's situation.

#2 - All eyes are on you with e-mail. With Twitter you quickly get lost in the stream, or your message might not even be seen at all!

#3 - You can type as much as you want with e-mail.

However, I also agree that using both is an awesome strategy, as I've always believed in diversification.

          My 3 pence

I personally like to grow my email list through a lot of different channels, and Twitter is just one of them. I use Twitter, I enjoy building my followers.. but I don't spend as much time on it as I do other things. I use it as a fun communication tool... not my main means of marketing.

I have not had much success converting Twitter traffic into actual buyers. I think often times the type of people that follow marketers are other marketers, and they simply all spam each other with product offerings not realizing that few marketers take the time to sift through the entire stream all day long to see all the things being offered.

Twitter is still such a huge partially charted potential it would be silly to exclude one for the other.

Skill in marketing is innovation in motion and thought.

Why not explore deeper the potential for them to generate a closer relationship with your follower / customer.

As for me, I marry them by placing my twitter address in my emails and my tweetlater autoresponce contains my aweber email. If they choose to join my list they just respond and get a confirmation email.

    Pretty easy.

I would say both, in my follow up series I explain what twitter is and how to use it then invite them to follow me, it is just another way to reach and build a relationship with your list

I see what you mean in your original post. It is easy to miss a lot on twitter and never get around to seeing it again. Email, like you say, is different, they usually scan emails first. I would have to agree with everyone here that using twitter to grow your list is a great option when trying to do both.
