I have never created any of my own videos before but now decided to take the plunge. So my question is:

Do I need to spend a lot of money on a microphone for the audio?

Any advice most welcome

Do you have a laptop? Almost any laptop has a build in microphone. I personally use it and it captures my voice excellent. No need to spend a lot of money on a microphone if you have a good one in your laptop already .

No, although audio is 50% of the experience with video you can use a lower end lapel mic and you will be fine. Depending on the videos you're making (if not showing your face) you could also use a headset of some kind.

Don't use a built in microphone or a headset. Spend the money and do it right.

Thanks for the advice guys, maybe I should have been more specific.

I am using a PC not laptop and most of the videos will be just voice-over for slide presentations so no camcorder required, just audio.

      Thanks

just use the usual headset mic. it'll be sufficient in this case.

    Hey Rob,

No you shouldn't need to spend any money on that kind of thing, if your laptop/computer is fairly modern then it should have a microphone and webcam built in. If you go to Start on your comp >control panel>sound>recording you should see your microphone. Also you can go to Start>Control Panel>Speech Recognition in case you need to set up your microphone but, I think in most cases it comes already set up but here you should be able to change the volume etc if it is too quiet.

I've been creating videos for the last few months now and I also use a free software you can also download called apowersoft. It's really good and you can also do pip (picture in picture) with it as well! I didn't bother with the apowersofts video editor as you have to pay for that. I just edit my videos with windows moviemaker.

This is a great way to get started as it doesn't cost you anything and the videos are really good quality. Here's a link to one of my videos for you to see the quality, everything in this video has been created using these two pieces of free software https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOfI9dyTNH4

If after a while you want to advance your video editing and recording then Camtasia is a very good way to go although it is not free.

    Best of luck Rob!

    Regards,

    Steve

    Hi,

I started off with a set of senheisser headphones, budget model around £20 which you can hear in my tiered link building video series.

I since upgraded to a Blue Yeti which you can hear in my newest tutorials.

If its worth spending,do it at a cost.
There is no need of sparing your cash then you end up with less quality.
    Good luck!

I think it's more important to get comfortable in front of the camera first,
so if you decide to buy some equipment which is good..

make sure to start to record some videos in the meantime because you'll need some practice in the beginning to get used to it.
You can do it simply with your laptop camera and built in mic first.
Then you can decide depending on your budget what equipment u need!
