Hi,

When making an authority site, would it be best to use a market such as Sport, Health or a particular Niche such as how to get your ex back?

Narrow it down to a niche, even a sub-niche such as Sports -> Golf -> Putting, or Health and Beauty -> Weight loss -> home exercises. It's best to be an authority in a small niche than just another fish in a huge market pond.

Both work; it all depends on your approach, what your monetization model(s) is, how you plan on promoting the website, what kind of testing you'll be doing to increase conversions, etc.

Though focusing on a specific niche is far less of an undertaking. I personally prefer focusing on niches where I can target a very specific solution to a very specific want or need.

Definitely narrow things down. The more specific you can be, the better off you'll be.

Its best if you narrow down to specific niche...
Thinking of the broad market won't be that effective
    All the best!

I agree with the majority here. Narrow your focus down to a specific niche because then you know exactly who you are marketing to and you can focus your time and effort on providing them with exactly the quality content they want and/or need. If you go after too general of a niche then you likely won't be able to provide the specific information/help that all the customers in that broad niche need.

For instance, if you choose Sports as a niche you wouldn't be able to effectively write content for football, baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, racing, etc, etc, etc. That'd spread you way too thin to make a dent in the overall niche plus you wouldn't be providing great content for your customers. If you focus on a smaller niche like pro-football, though, you can find out what specifically your readers want to read/see and provide that for them.

Now, if you have a ton of resources like ESPN or Sports Illustrated that would be a different matter altogether...
