Does anyone still park domains?

I'm a newbie just getting into marketing, one of the ways I found to make money was parking expired domains. The first question I have is anyone making money with this? I know this question has been asked a 1000 times!!! I'm just curious I know this has been around for a while but its July 21 2013 is it still relevant? The second question I have is when you do buy domains and everything checks out do you just leave the domain alone and park it? Or do you develop the domain and park it? Thanks for your responses in advance

I can't answer how much anyone makes, but it seems to me that more domains are parked than are actually used.

As a random example, I chose "doggrooming". I promise I'm not making this up - it really was the first phrase that came to mind.

    .com is parked
    .co is parked
    .org is parked
.net is taken but goes nowhere as is .co.uk and .us and .ca and .com.au
    .biz is forwarded
    .in is parked
    .me is parked
    .info is parked
    .mobi is parked

This is, apparently, a premium domain name and yet NONE of them are actually being used.

Make of that what you will. But pick a random keyword and you will find the same pattern, although there are usually more real sites than there are for this keyword.

Thanks rosetress that makes a lot of sense, I was thinking instead of just buying a expired domain and just parking it, I was going to develop it and redirect the traffic to a website I plan on creating

Many moons ago domain parking was a nice way to get monthly income.

Today makes no sense. Any 3 pages website with Adsense, Affiliate link or
product selling according to the site, are generating more money.

I think the owners don't know about it or they're lazy.

Too many people think that they are going to make a killing and overvalue their domain names.

I have a name I wanted and the broker for it keeps emailing me every 3 months with a lower selling price. I might bite in the future, but I moved on from it once I was turned off by the high price initially.

If someone has a true benchmark name like business.com , then you can write your own check. The guy that owned that name made 7 figures when it sold. As far as most everyone else, they are finding that many a name is staying parked and the renewals are adding up.

I can vouch for that. A colleague of mine had to let a .com domain name go and it was snapped up by someone in Korea, who turned round and demanded $5k for it. Needless to say we registered the .co.uk version. My colleague has now trademarked the name for use in the UK and Europe.

I enjoy watching the poor fellow in Korea as he keeps extending the registration on the useless .com version.

Seems to me most people search through google instead of typing in keyword domain names now. Where as I mean they type dog toys into google and don't just put dog toys.com into search bar. From my experience type in traffic has certainly went down considerably on parked domains.

Whats Even worse is they Dont want to come off the TLD's without a premium price. In the last year you've made 17.00 from parking dog grooming.com and you want me to buy it from you for 5,000? Are you making up lost revenue here?

There are some keywords that are powerful enough that I would be willing to spend nice money on for the .com but id have to know my investment was coming back ten fold

As far as parking today - Parked domain dont get ranked and don't add value to anyone looking to Sell/Flip and CTRs are Just terrible. I Would advise you to put up a Few pages Of GOOD QUALITY some adsense and Banners (Not too much though) and Update Every 2 - 4 weeks to keep it fresh, Add Value, Then Sell

On a side Note, You cant "Promote" parked pages ... Its against TOS for a lot of the parking services.... But If you have content, you can promote, drive traffic, and raise value.

    Good Luck!

It still has money in it and there will be the difference is that now it is not as powerful market as it used to be, domains that used to earn $1500 a day, now earn $100 to $250.

    I need an answer

I have a wordpress site that has content and is on page 1 of it keyword... then I switched it over to "cashparking" with godaddy...
Within this process- i noticed that you no longer have access to the wordpress dashboard or any of the previous seo plugins.

    SO
#1 Does cashparking just take the url and then have its own seo process or does it use the current page rank and position that is already established.

    #2
Do people purchase new url's and go straight to cashparking ?
If so then you simply rely on the seo of the keywords that are entered in the cashparking dashboard and that is it while relying on a low competition keyword category... then cross your fingers and hope it makes it tyo page one

    Any thoughts?

I still own about a hundred parked domains. A few years back it made a substantial contribution to my income, but not anymore.

Occasionally (several times this past year), I get a good offer for one and I let it go. I don't actively seek buyers for them though I used to pay a few brokers to do that for me in the past.

I am slowly but surely exploiting them for myself by building websites for them and that been paying off quite well.

Very few domains earn any revenue from a standard parked page. A small handfull earn quite a bit. Parking a page these days is really a "what the heck, may as well do it just in case it earns something until I get to it" kind of thing.

Search engines avoid indexing parked pages for obvious reasons, as they provide no value to the browser. That means you are relying on people to type in the domain in the search box to land on the site. That doesn't happen often unless you have a killer keyword domain.
