Bad (reputation) domain and now?

Hi,

I'm working on a website which seems to have a bad reputation. At least I can't think of anything else why it ranks poorly.

The content is optimized, using the reconsider option in Google webmaster tools gives a green light and I've also uploaded a list in the disavow tool.

It seems the domain has had porn on it untill 6-7 years back..., but if the domain has a bad reputation for that how the .... do I get this site to ever rank in Google again?

Anybody any experience with this any tips?

Thanks!

You should check all content, widgets, and other site optimization stuffs and make sure that none of them break Google terms... Then try to keep regular posts, at least daily. You will need couple weeks or even months before Google re-index your site

  • Roderickvs,

You say you have uploaded a list in the disavow tool, did Google actually give confirmation that bad links you have identified are not counting against the site? Keep in mind that even if they disavow those links for you, that is not the best way to recover from links that are harming a domain. The best way is to actually get them removed.
Are you sure you have found all poor links that are pointing at the site? Sometimes its easy to miss some.

    Best,

    Shawn

How do you find which are the bad links in the first place?

that's one to look into, but a lot of bad sites are old and not managed anymore ..., hard to really get links removed

An aged domain is a two-edged sword and not always something to relish.

In this particular case (bad history), the disadvantages of bad links and reputation may well outweigh the perceived advantage of an aged domain.

Is there a reason why you can't start a new site using the old content? There are plug-ins etc that can make the process quite easy and painless.

If the two sites (old and new) don't have the same focus, purpose, and target audience, exactly, I wouldn't hesitate to wipe the slate clean and start anew.

        The best to you,

I’d rather work on a fresh and clean domain than try my luck to rank one with a bad reputation. The next time that you buy a domain name, make sure that you carefully investigate first. The last thing you’d want to do is be the last person line that’ll have to do a lot of renovating a domain which is already in a bad shape.

If it’s possible, just start fresh.

            Roderickvs,

There are always options to slightly changing a domain name without losing the brandname.

For example: myproduct.com (old brand name)

New domains keeping the old brand name:
            • getmyproduct.com
            • trymyproduct.com
            • usemyproduct.com
            • newmyproduct.com
            • myproductsite.com
            • myproductsales.com
            • myproduct2013.com
Well, you get the point - brand new domain to erase the bad history while still keeping the brand name intact.

            Good luck to you,

            Steve
