Anyone ever made a charity site?

Hi guys,

I have a friend looking to make a charity site, and was wondering what the best platform for accepting donations was? Paypal takes a huge cut. If you've had experience with accepting donations, please let me know!

Thanks,
#charity #made #site

    PayPal typically takes 2.9% plus 30 cents. Unless they for some of reason take more for donations than anything else.. I wouldn't say that's a huge cut. In fact, I doubt you'll find a trusted, dependable way to receive donations for less.

      They take 2.2% plus 30 cents for nonprofits.

        Thanks, never used them for charity. I assumed it wouldn't be more than their regular fee. Glad to see its less.

    Gonna bookmark this thread as my friend is interested too;
    It's pretty sad Paypal takes a cut out of charity money - but I guess everyone would bypass the % they pay for stuff normally & say it's all for charity lol.

    Anyway I'm assuming PayPal is the best bet for now.

    Actually, unless, your friend is able to set up an SMS service where I'd text "XYZ" to "number here" and it comes out of either my current airtime credit (pay as you go) or end of the month bill etc.

    When I built my first charity site, I contacted some banks and saw what they could do for me. It was easy to set up a credit card processor but not cheap. The banks helped to prove to the processor I was awesome! I only recommend it for high yielding charity sites. Paypal is the best option because it's easy but it also depends on your target donor. Not all donors even know how to use paypal.

    I hope your friends site is great. Don't forget Kickstarters.. I think they process payments directly too.

    In addition to funding options, you may also want to consider legality of a charity type website. If you are collecting money on behalf of a registered charity, you may need to be certified legally to do so. Check with your country's laws on charitable organizations and see if you qualify.

      Yes, dito to what the above poster said. I set up a charity website for a new local humane society. Paypal was the best option BUT they would not use their first donations to properly set up a legal non-profit organization so I quit. It's impossible to do without that. Once done though, paypal offered the best and least expensive online donation option.

    I did! I created a URL shortener like Adf.ly but instead of paying users, I planned to donate money to charities. The project failed because no one wanted to use my shortener to help poor people.
