Is this legal and is it profitable?

Using RSS feeds to make a little news website, similar to this one: Suriname Nieuws - Het overzicht van het actuele Surinaamse nieuws

I want to make one for my local state. This is fully automated due to RSS and the news articles get updated automatically, which is great, giving the source to each one with a hyperlink to the article itself.

I'm guessing the only way to make money off of this would be from ads like the guy from the link above used?

i think it is legal but you hardly rank your site or get it indexed. You got to do your own promotion.

Why wouldn't I be able to get it ranked? I have established a set of keywords for which I can get an EMD averaging about 2000 local searches a month. I'm sure the article titles would help too?

The reason it'd be harder to rank is the RSS feed is duplicate content, not ideal for ranking. It's possibly but a much more uphill battle.

Depends on the competition, normally you need an article with at least 500 words to get your page indexed fast. I doubt EMD + titles only will get your indexed, those titles from RSS feed is considered duplicated content. The only way for such site is do your own promotion IMO.

I can actually read the site since it's Dutch, and from it I can see once again that 98 % of it is negative news about people dying in traffic and about terrible world issues. Maybe if you can spin it into something more positive, (or maybe just something different) then you might have a new angle to work from.

Yes. It is both: legal (you don't steal anything) and profitable if you will work hard. I mean you have to make your site really useful (an eye-catching design, properly picked feeds etc).

It's legal but generic news sits are rarely profitable. The traffic is just not ad click friendly from my experience.
