[Opinions Wanted] Quality vs Quantity? Whats Your Position?

Quality vs Quantity? Whats Your Position?

I Don't mean "throw up 250 piss poor sites with adwords", But Do you think its better to give 100% to 1 or 2 sites or Start a bunch in numerous niches and split your 100% between all of them (Naturally Lowering the quality due to the dividing)

Just wanted to get Opinions on The matter, as sometimes I feel like I want my hands in too many pots, Rookie mistake that I didnt notice in myself until reading a LOT of threads on here. Input is muchly Appreciated!

Heard an anology once that really stuck.... Gonna share a version of that.

If you take a magnifying glass and hold it between the sun and a pile of leaves, you can FOCUS that energy to a precise point. If you hold that focused energy still long enough, you can ignite a fire.

If you keep moving the magnifying glass or don't focus the sun's energy enough... Well, no ignition and no fire.

Nice! Im Gathering your suggesting, FOCUSing on 1 or possibly 2, because the more you focus on 1, the greater the reward

Makes sense, and point taken Thanks for the reply!

Definitely agree about the power of focus.

But there's also power in know the right methods and taking action on those methods.

If you have a good grasp of a couple/few methods that aren't overly complicated but can all be divided between your time (multiple focuses), in my opinion that is best.

Multiple streams of income (especially those that can connect to each other) are best in my opinion.

Nice analogy. I'm a quality guy myself. If you operate in multiple niches... how are you going to keep up with the "inside job" of marketing your business? I'm talking about creating backend products, backend marketing, email marketing, internet marketing, and etc. You may have to hire some staff.

But operate in 1 niche and solely dedicate your efforts to it.... all of these things can be handled in a cinch.

  • Quality vs. Quantity...

Ask any millionaire (if you have access to any) and ask him how he made his first million: was it by earning $100k from 10 different businesses, or was it $1M all coming from the same business? I can assure you it was all coming from the same business...

More of the story: focus your efforts on one single quality project (website) and ditch the rest.

I say if what you are doing is whitehat, quality versus quantity is not an issue in SEO and marketing.

The more you do the more you learn and you will find something that works. It helps me to just try different things and sometimes I don't even know which tactic works when it starts working.

It's not a clear cut answer.

Sometimes you gotta throw some stuff against the wall and see what sticks!

    Then focus on that :-)

@Everyone else, I knew it wasnt a cut and dry answer, which is the reason I put [Opinions wanted] in the title....

I have been reading many many many threads on here and have an idea of who are the "go-getters" and making money online that I just wanted to see where you stood as far as time investment with sites.

Personally, I have one Main Site That I put most everything into and I have a few, .... So called "Auto Sites" Like 2 Where Im Just updating Once a week or so from Amazon Products and Email Capture pages that are related to my niche, no work needed there really

I want to create My Own product next, Just not sure where to start, Still filtering threads, but something will come to me Im sure

But Lastly I want to thank everyone for their replies, Except the spam comment I hope get deleted

    Always be laser-targeted.
So yeah, take 1 site and maximize it.

Yeah, focus is good. But I don't see anwthing wrong with handling 2 sites if you are capable enough. More energy would be required, and not without its benefits. That's all!

My personal strong predisposition is to believe that quality comes first, focus effort on one or two things that you can do very well (probably things you are passionate about, by nature), etc. But that belief was shaken somewhat when reading numerous pundits in this area -- Court Tuttle among others -- that seem to view websites as almost throwaway things that you create, in volume, repeatedly, and that it is not necessary (maybe even not desirable) to have an intense personal interest in any of the subjects of them. That goes against my grain, bigtiime. But on the other hand, I want to be realistic about what will actually be effective, and these guys (like Court) are highly successful. So I am still turning all this over in my mind. For me, the passion part comes easily. But I have to make it work as a business.

Great post and replies, I believe experience plays a big role in website development, certainly attempting to develop multiple websites while sacrificing quality over quantity will produce the results that a majority of marketers experience in this industry.

However it is possible once you have more experience that you can develop and maintain a higher standard of quality using tools.

Just as you would not expect to dig a 40 foot ditch with a shovel, using the right tools and knowledge of how to use those tools, equates to delivering a higher standard of quality over time.

    Start out slow...

Years ago when I was still in college, I worked a part time job as a manager of a steak house, as part of my duties I had to learn every job in the place, from washing dishes to cooking steaks, it was a though demanding position.

One afternoon the District manager pulled me aside and said to me, "You can be slow but good, but you cant be slow and bad" Meaning that I could cook steaks slow and produce a quality product but I could not cook a steak too slow and burn it.

I took stock of that statement and realized that I could cook a few really great steaks but I was never going to be able to cook a hundred steaks in one hour.

Very good replies, think you have a lot of decisions to make and like everyone is saying it's not clear-cut.

My two cents - and playing the devils advocate here on most of the other opinions - is that one site for quality is great but Google is a deadly beast and if your site for any reason is blacklisted you have all your eggs in one basket (another analogy there)

The scatter approach (provided your sites are hosted on separate accounts) will prevent against this risk... but you will probably need to then look to outsource some of the work to ensure quality on all your sites. Multi-income streams is the way the big boys are making money online right now.

So multi sites would be my recommendation - but give each enough time and commitment to get them up and running to a point where you are merely maintaining before moving on... and look to outsource work such as new content etc.

Heard this one on the WF in a different thread. "If you chase 2 rabbits you will catch neither."

HOWEVER clever sayings often do not reflect the real world:

I would not say that having 100 sites is chasing 100 rabbits. As that in itself could be a single strategy. Anyone remember the micro sites? Your goal could be to have 1 awesome site that brings you in a large amount per month OR 100 small sites that bring you in a smaller amount each per month.

There are advantages to both. For example: with the larger site you will attract more people naturally because the site is 'above' its competition (hopefully). However your also at a disadvantage with the single site because if it looses popularity or ranking etc. your out of business. Where as with the 100 smaller sites your diversifying and thus minimizing your risk.

Personally I say that this cant be answered unless more info is given. What are your goals? What us your niche? How will you monetize?

      Dean,

I tend to sit in the camp that says to focus on quality as that's what really sells. Quantity doesn't guarantee anything except a lot of work to maintain each site.

Others have said not to put all your eggs in one basket and that you need multiple streams of income.

      Yes, I agree completely, but here's the thing . . .

You can have multiple streams of income and not put all your eggs in one basket even though you have one business and one main site. Your focus just has to be on building or licensing (or having others create for you) multiple backend products and/or services.

When you think about the tasks that most people would agree you need to accomplish with your website like adding content, building a relationship with customers, doing SEO (onsite and off), getting back links, advertising, creating multiple back ends, etc, etc, etc . . . it makes the choice even easier . . . 1 site or 100? How can you really accomplish all the tasks necessary if you have 100 sites?

You have to remember that sales and income are the result of marketing. If you spend an inordinate amount of time on "building" your sales will generally reflect that fact.

Good luck to you and everyone,

      Steve

Frank Kern started by outsourcing an e-book about the behavior of dogs and then created one mini site for each breed. That's over 60 websites. That in itself is a strategy.

In my opinion you should start by focusing on 1-2 sites and make them work. Once you start getting solid profit from them, you would know that you have got the basics down and have enough skills to be profiting off of them. Then like all successful business men, scale it up.

Quantity I would say just think of competition you might have, Go for quality if you don't have too much competition or just dominate what ever the niche you have but with good content...if you don't do this someone other might do it looks foolish right? but think deeper.. Its my thinking I just think the opposite what others do. excuse me if you found this stupid.

Easy Now! This is an Opinion Post, and Everyone has one, No right, and no wrong, Just because you think different than someone else doesn't make it or you stupid, There are A LOT of rich people out here all because the thought DIFFERENTLY! thanks for the share

I Didn't get a chance to quote about the all eggs in a basket, and multiple streams of income, But I see it as putting eggs in a carton, then putting Several cartons into one basket. If One Carton Breaks, you have others to fall back on! Great strategy

I Like that fact that people are like 1-2 is a good start, Im working on 2 blogs now, that will take up time, but I wanted to add 2 Amazon sites, Just needing promoting and maybe a 1 hour update,, once a week ... main Focus Would be my 2 blogs, then like everyone says, Once I have got some fudamentals down, Scale it up

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts and opinions, It means a lot to see what some of the best are doing with there time and efforts.

  • Both are valid. Some make a fortune on quantity with less quality, some make with less quantity more quality and some both. Pick a strategy you like, they all work if done optimally.

It is not a question of either or, you need to open several mini sites, see what works and they you convert that into an authority site, otherwise you can spend years building something that it is not going to work.

Try several mini sites, once you see what is leaving the most money/leads then expand.

I'd also focus on 1 or 2. But remember, don't give up. You will fail. Some sites just simply fail and it's important that you learn from it, so next time you will recognize winners early on.

You just need a few winners in this game and be all set (:
