What happened to Free Software?

Only a few years you could happily download a whole range of software's for free but these days most companies force you to install an .exe installer so they can put lots of crap on your system before you get the software.

As a software developer I can answer this one really simply.

"I need to eat just like everyone else"

The long version is: The average software has more lines of code then the average novel has lines of text. Only with software each line has to be flawless both grammatically ( code structure and no typos ) and logically ( novels can have a bad plot, illogical programs dont work ).

On average it takes a trained professional 100+ hours to write, develop, test and tweak anything but the most basic script. With some being much more involved(Wordpress has over 197,000 lines of code.
FireFox has just under 2 million) To put that into perspective. The FireFox browser has the text equivilant of around 65 full length novels and as I said it must be typed tested and work flawless.

This does not even include the graphic designers who also need to eat.

Software should no more be free than should the product of any other persons labor.
