How can I look for keywords within this niche?

I would like to start a football (soccer) blog about my favorite team.

I've been searching for hours and hours for a set of keywords which I can focus on to climb the Google rankings but I'm struggling.

I don't want to focus on very specific terms, I want to talk about the team as a whole. From transfer news to match analysis and betting odds, I want to include it all. Is this too general?

Here are some examples:

Arseblog … an Arsenal blog

Red Rants - Manchester United Blog | Manchester United News

Thanks.

Well you can get help of Google Adwords, KeywordXP and many other free softwares and websites that are really helpful. They can help you in any niche.

One of the simple ways to find good keywords that's rarely talked about is just to type one of your keywords into google search and see the suggestions it makes.

For example; using the terms you said you want to talk about about:-
transfer news to match analysis and betting odds

you could type in "manchester united" and then look at all the google suggestions; or "match analysis" or "betting odds". This will show you what people are actually typing into google that is connected with those terms.

To get a little more advanced: you could type in one or two of your words and then just the letter 'a', and then the letter 'b' and so on just going through the alphabet. You'll be amazed at some of the things that come up that you may never have thought of.

I hope that makes sense. If you try it, you should see how it works

One thing I noticed is I'd also be competing with the clubs official website in most cases, wouldn't I?

Just put in "manchester united" and Arsenal in Google Adwords Keyword tool and look for keywords with a high amount of search and use them in your blog.

So I don't have to focus on a single set of keywords for my blog? I try to rank for different terms by using the tool to find keywords which I would use in different posts?

Use the keyword tool to find specific keywords for posts.

If you are setting up a blog, then you already have some of your categories. Use news, match analysis and betting odds as your categories. From there you can create posts that will fit nicely in each category.

Let me show you what I mean. For news you could write about all the latest things that are happening to your team.

For betting odds you could show the odds and then write about how you think the odds are correct or way off base.

This is just an example, but I hope you understand what I mean.

A lot of times you will get "unintended SEO," on search terms you haven't optimized for.
