ipage.com/hosting????????

I was just wondering if anyone here use ipage.com as their source of web hosting. I have heard the Host Gator is just about the best hosting company out there. Or at least one of the best. thanks

I don't think I've heard of ipage. I use Hostgator, and I'm one of those people who thinks it's one of the best out there. Their customer support is great and their uptime is excellent.

iPage is a brand of EIG - which I'd recommend staying away from. They own pretty much 95% of the "unlimited" web hosts and operate under different brands.

What are your requirements & what types of sites are you looking to host?

I have seen lot of reviews with negative ratings for iPage. If your planning to host a Wordpress site, I don't recommend going for iPage. Bluehost or Hostgator are the best.

Although iPage and HG are owned by the same company, I have to say I have seen a HUGE difference between the two when it comes to performance.

I was with iPage for over a year, and my WordPress sites were a pain to navigate. Then I switched to HG and immediately saw a dramatic speed increase all across the board (for all my sites.)

Yes, I use shared accounts as opposed to private ones, and both hosting services are owned by the same company. This means that the increase in speed could very well just be a coincidence. But I'm still glad I made the switch nevertheless.

Well, since HostGator is being moved to EIG datacenters, I suspect you'll run into the same in the near future as you're being moved right back. :/

Probably for the best. I mean, most of these large, bargain basement providers are "ok" for cheap, on a budget plans in terms of the resources claimed however, if you want things like premium software, operating systems (CloudLinux), backups or other features, you're better off doing a bit more research.

HostGator is being moved to the same place/hardware/etc of BlueHost, iPage, iPower, HostMonster, JustHost etc.

I'd recommend looking at some other companies such as StableHost, MDD Hosting etc. Perhaps check some of the offers over at webhostingtalk.com

I told Siteground $35.00 wasn't acceptable so I'd just take care of it through my credit card company. They gave me back my $35.00

Here is my 2cents on the issue it is cheap as dirt and they have wordpress auto installs. I am a customer it works just as good as Blue Host and it works much better than Host Gator since the migration. Is it going to be as good as VPS? No But then again for a total of $48 (sometimes $24 when they run a sale) which includes 2 years of web hosting and free domain name registration it is hard to beat. If your just getting started it is just what you need.

And why would you cancel it you pay for it upfront? Makes no sense to me.

I wouldn't pay more than $1/year for iPage (as I did when I signed up through a recent promotion). My free web hosting account from ServerHub consistently outperforms my iPage hosting. Don't go with slow hosting; it can cost you.

I clicked on a few and it showed "Total Purchase: $0.00" on the order page. The only one that had $1 show up was iPage.

Interesting. Looks like when they activate a promotion on one site, it creates the promotion page for all similar sites, but doesn't necessarily update the billing system. Well, it's not like anybody needs a dozen of the same but differently branded hosting account.:p

Well, the iPage hosting is still $1/year, apparently for the same hosting they're selling for $70/yr under some of their other brands.

I've been an iPage customer for several years. I have a business package (shared hosting) with them. iPage utilizes an odd cPanel for their backend admin that's not as functional as the one used by Hostgator and most other popular hosting companies.

They (iPage) offers a lot of good features and up-sells in services that are similar in value to Host Gator's. Customer service was always pretty good. I even have a sales rep assigned to me which contacts me by phone, skype, and email on occasion.

That being said, all of the websites that I've hosted with iPage have extremely slow load times. After many conversations with iPage and several migrations to different servers on their part, load speeds have only increased! I run a lot of my own software and scripts on the back end and this only seems to compound the problem (cpu power) further.

I had planned on not renewing my account with them this year and migrate the dozen or so domains/sites that I have on their servers to one of the other hosting companies that I employ but just haven't had the time. Hence, I got re-billed and stuck with them for another year (well over $100 a year).

The sites I currently have on iPage's servers are some of my old sites which still bring in some residual income through adsense and such. I haven't updated them in over a year or more, yet they still bring in enough to cover hosting, upkeep, with a little spare change left over, so this is not a big deal. They pay for themselves.

I would not recommend them for the sole reason that they have not been able to resolve the speed issues. Like I said, they have great customer service, and very little down time, but I don't think they have the hardware to handle my needs.

    Media Temple

My primary business is hosted on a VPS from Media Temple. I can't say enough good things about them. If you are serious about making a full time living online, in a business that involves high volumes of traffic, a virtual private server is the only way to go.

Media Temple (in my humble opinion), is the best out there. It's expensive but more than pays for itself. They also offer great shared hosting packages as well. They cost more than most, but their benefits justify those costs by far. There's not enough room to discuss them here, so Google them and check them out for yourself. I make my living on the web, therefore I hire professional services to fulfill my business requirements. (Yes, I am biased towards them and also sell web hosting to my clients which I also host on Media Temple).

    HostGator

I also have a business hosting package (shared hosting) with Hostgator that has served me quite well over the years. I generally build my new sites and host them on my Hostgator account for trial, testing, and tweaking. If they produce enough money and generate lots of traffic, I migrate them over to my VPS on Media Temple. With Medial Temple, my billing is incremental with my hosting needs (CPU power, memory, etc).

Yep. I sold a site on Flippa a couple months ago and had a rough time trying to transfer it to the buyer's iPage hosting. Their cPanel interface is different than anything I'd ever seen. It seemed really outdated.

Their support was helpful. I can't say much negative about that, but after using Hostgator for so long I'd feel like I was taking a step back in time with these guys.

My two bits. Hope that helps.

@Joe - I stopped using their cPanel for most operations and do everything from a command line terminal using ftp or ssh instead.

How did you get SSH access from iPage? Everything I've read about it seems to indicate that they don't offer SSH.

Good catch Mojojuju. I was late picking up my son and heading out the door when I wrote that.

What I meant to say is that I use command line the majority of the time (gftp), occasionally Filezilla when I'm running a gui (I run pc-bsd and slackware linux on most of my boxes). I use a script to invoke Filezilla on a different monitor (tty2) and the protocol setting I use in Filezilla is called <SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol>. It's not SSH but SFTP.

I try to increase my productivity and stream line everything I do by writing short programs and or scripts (python is ideally suited for this) to automate repetitive tasks.

Sorry about veering off topic a bit.
