Buying a domain - 1,2,3....years?

Greetings all,

It has been for some time that I follow WF. I find great tips and advices from many people.

Internet Marketing is something that I really like, but, I have to admit, there is a lot to learn and every day we learn something new.

With this in mind, I want the opinion of someone that have good experience in this (I guess many have).

When buying a domain name, how many years do you register that domain? Is it really worthy to spend more money to register for more then a year?
Let's say I buy a domain and register for 5 years, I know, for example, many domain sellers offer discounts when buying for more time, like GoDaddy, but in terms of SEO does it help or is this overrated? I always heard that Google sees long registration domains as "more serious" then a 1 year registration.
Is this true?

So tell me what you do when you buy a domain name.

Thank you all.

In terms of SEO, it makes no difference how many years you register a domain for. Once the domain with working website is years old, then it can make a difference because stability is established.

Gene Pimentel gave you the right answer already.

Regarding registration period, I always register for one year.
No need to invest more money than necessary.
After one year, if I decide to let the domain go, I sell it before
expiration. If I've other plans, I renew it.

@kar351 - In most cases I would recommend you just register for 1 year, you can always renew it.

if its a domain name with a good name that you know will get a lot of views, buy it for 3 years. You never know, you might get an offer to buy your domain and you can start investing the funds on a project

    I too agree with Meharis

I also Register domain for 1 Year as it not much make any sense spending much on 1st Instance.

Buy the domain and spent time to it and make it known. Then decide whether you want Sell it or Renew for your bigger dreams fulfillment.

I had 1 domain that I registered for Long coz to fulfill my childish dream (4 Years on first instance & 3 Years during Renew period this March)

Register for 1 year. If the site starts doing well then consider renewing for a longer period. Why spend money that you dont have to. Keep a look out for Godaddy discount codes - that will assist in bringing the price down too.

      Well this was a surprise!

Many people claiming more or less the same thing. Thank you very much to all of you.

I guess the point is, no use to buy a domain for more then 1 year until we can see if our idea, our work or niche is going to work. So, I got the feeling that, buying 1 year is good to "test the waters", then if the waters are good and warm renew it for 2 or more years.

      @DubDubDubDot
Thank you very much for that video, if guys from Google talk like that, there is a reason for it.

Since I cannot spend too much money on hosting, domains and other stuff, I really have to consider all this.
All of your opinions were very helpful.

      Thank you.

@kar351 - What Google say and what Google reward you for/what works in the real world are 2 separate things entirely.

Do what's best for you. Have limited funds? Register for 1 Year.

Want to make that domain your baby and develop a brand that will pay you for a lifetime? Register for longer or just renew before the expiry date. Simples!

I don't think it helps with seo. After all even a spammer could register for 10 years since domain registration is so cheap.

But it certainly doesn't hurt any to register for 5 or 10 years.
