5 Powerful Hot Tips on How to Create a Successful Writing Career

I am not a best seller author. I still have a long way to go.

But I have been learning a lot over the past few years and I think it is time to share some of the tips and tricks that I have picked up. If you are thinking about starting a content writing business this thread is for you. Below are 5 powerful tips that will help you create a successful location independent writing career.

1. Network.

Don't hesitate to talk about what you do for a living with new friends. Learn how to network offline and online and your list of long-term clients will drastically expand in a short period of time. Create an account on Linkedin and join groups related to writing. Linkedin is one of the best social media websites for creating a career. Don't hesitate to use it.

2. Pursue offline work.

One of my friends used to write a newsletter for a restaurant in his home country. The newsletter was 1,000 words long and guess how much the restaurant was paying him? 10$? 20$? 50? 100$?.... No, they were paying him 250$ for one newsletter. Eventually news got around that he was writing the newsletter and several corporate businessmen hired him to write newsletters for their companies. He had more than enough work to live comfortably. Don't be afraid to pursue offline work. Simply going out of your way to ask a small business owner if he or she could use a writer could set you up for life.

3. Charge rates you are comfortable with and fire clients who can't afford you.

You do not need to lower your rates for anyone. Sometimes it is a nice gesture to give a client a generous discount. But you don't need to lower your rates permanently just for one client. If he can't afford you, don't work for him. It is that simple.

4. Read a new book every week.

Not only will reading one book per week increase your knowledge about topics but it will also help you improve your writing. Take note of how each author conveys his viewpoint and adapt your writing style accordingly. Never stop improving your writing skills. If you want be a successful writer you need to be an excellent writer and to be an excellent writer you need to study and improve your skills. Read books on how to improve your writing as well as books on topics that personally interest you. Just make it a habit of reading at least one book a week.

5. Create a personal blog. Write everyday.

Practice makes perfect. Every writer occasionally experiences a dry-spell. How can you practice writing if you do not have any writing work at the moment? Write for yourself. You can either create a simple blog online where you can blog about your experiences or thoughts or you can simply write in a notebook. Either way, make it a habit of writing something everyday. I would recommend writing at least 1,000 words everyday.

So I hope you found the tips in this thread useful. Feel free to discuss each tip or add new tips as you please. Thanks for reading!

I agree with #4 and #5. The best writers are writers with a broad knowledge base. Moreover, reading lots of new stuff opens your mind to different writing styles and approaches. It also helps you make your arguments more cogent, concise, and effective. As for #5, I keep a 'make money blogging' blog where I explore different IM techniques and explore content quality issues. It helps me to polish my writing.

Writing is one of those skils that rust quickly if you don't use it on a daily basis. Writing is like breathing to me. I just can't live without it.

The hardest part of writing is the researching. If you are extremely knowledgeable about what you write and passionate about it, then writing usually comes easily and naturally.

Some good advice here, thank you!

The more you write the more your skills develop, but your ability to research unfamiliar subjects efficiently also develops.

You'd probably earn a ton more as a freelance copywriter. Your advice is sound... but the bottom line is a good marketing strategy. It all depends on what you write about as a content writer... this will determine how much you get paid for your work - assuming you dont have your own website promoting your services.

I thought this thread got lost in the Warrior Forum thread limbo. Nice to see it pop back up here.

Randall Magwood, you are right. I was going to mention in this thread how it is a good idea to diversify the TYPE of content you write. But I figured I would save those details for another thread.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to create my own website due to different reasons but hopefully it will be up soon. I am currently reading books on how to work as a copywriter; I don't think my skills are good enough to market them yet - soon! Thanks!

I will open a new thread with some more writing tips a bit later

Great tips! Thanks for posting them, Timbonitus.

I like #2 and #3 especially. And it's good to be reminded of #1 too, especially of using LinkedIn.

About your own website? Why not just put up a WP blog to start with? You can always add fancy stuff later (or make your blog fancier)...

    Thanks for the post timbonitus.

I completely agree with what you said about pursuing offline work. I had a very good experience relating to this. I'll just brief it. I happened to go to a small shop for buying some grocery and as a rational human being I talked generally about the weather and other things while paying my bills with the shopkeeper and we exchanged our professional life and as I am a developer he was interested in doing a website for his shop.

My $10 grocery and some 5 min talk gave me a work of some hundred bucks...

So do not hesitate to offer or market your services and skills.

    Regards

Good tips for any writer, certainly. I would like to also add one of my own: #6 - Specialize as soon as you can. You can demand higher rates for specialized content and you become a well known writer in your particular field. I started out as a content writer, which meant doing lots of research on stuff I knew little about before I was hired to write about it. Once I began writing in a niche I knew very intimately, I was an instant authority and other sites in that niche sought me out to write for them and I started making some real money. So follow your passion and your experience to the topics you can write about best.

Good advice. When you have some inspirations, just write it in time.

This last tip is especially important as the mere act of writing (in your own niche, even for practice) is likely to inspire ideas for paid writing projects. If you are worried about duplicate content issues (or for legal reasons not being able to sell previously published content), then simply make the personal post on your blog private and neither Google search or potential clients will know about it.
