I am not a best seller author. I still have a long way to go.

But I have been learning a lot over the past few years and I think it is time to share some of the tips and tricks that I have picked up. If you are thinking about starting a content writing business this thread is for you. Below are 5 powerful tips that will help you create a successful location independent writing career.

1. Network.

Don't hesitate to talk about what you do for a living with new friends. Learn how to network offline and online and your list of long-term clients will drastically expand in a short period of time. Create an account on Linkedin and join groups related to writing. Linkedin is one of the best social media websites for creating a career. Don't hesitate to use it.

2. Pursue offline work.

One of my friends used to write a newsletter for a restaurant in his home country. The newsletter was 1,000 words long and guess how much the restaurant was paying him? 10$? 20$? 50? 100$?.... No, they were paying him 250$ for one newsletter. Eventually news got around that he was writing the newsletter and several corporate businessmen hired him to write newsletters for their companies. He had more than enough work to live comfortably. Don't be afraid to pursue offline work. Simply going out of your way to ask a small business owner if he or she could use a writer could set you up for life.

3. Charge rates you are comfortable with and fire clients who can't afford you.

You do not need to lower your rates for anyone. Sometimes it is a nice gesture to give a client a generous discount. But you don't need to lower your rates permanently just for one client. If he can't afford you, don't work for him. It is that simple.

4. Read a new book every week.

Not only will reading one book per week increase your knowledge about topics but it will also help you improve your writing. Take note of how each author conveys his viewpoint and adapt your writing style accordingly. Never stop improving your writing skills. If you want be a successful writer you need to be an excellent writer and to be an excellent writer you need to study and improve your skills. Read books on how to improve your writing as well as books on topics that personally interest you. Just make it a habit of reading at least one book a week.

5. Create a personal blog. Write everyday.

Practice makes perfect. Every writer occasionally experiences a dry-spell. How can you practice writing if you do not have any writing work at the moment? Write for yourself. You can either create a simple blog online where you can blog about your experiences or thoughts or you can simply write in a notebook. Either way, make it a habit of writing something everyday. I would recommend writing at least 1,000 words everyday.
