How do you use your dual monitors?

Planning to get another monitor hooked up so I can have dual monitors.

I'm curious though. For those here that are also using dual monitors:

1) How are you using your dual monitors? (What do you use each monitor for)
2) How have the dual monitors helped you / your business? (Whether it be productivity, organization, etc. how EXACTLY is it helping you?)

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

Do a search on here and you'll find some great threads on the benefits of using dual monitors.

For me, having a second monitor is one of the best productivity boosters there is. You don't actually realise how good it is until you try it for yourself.

It's a bit like having 2 computers where both of them have instant access to the same software, folders, data etc.

And dragging stuff from one to the other is fun the first time!

Seriously, I tend to use the one in front of me for the stuff I'm working on and use the other (which is at the side and angled towards me) for things like my browser, Outlook etc - things I use on and off throughout the day.

If you're a web software developer it's great having your development system in front of you and being able to preview the result in your browser on a separate screen without all the time-wasting minimizing and maximizing.

    Cheers,

    Neil

monitor #1 is permanently on with Firefox.

My second monitor is mainly used for programming, web designing, etc..

I.E to say, my 1st monitor has Firefox permanently on so I can access the internet at any one time. my second monitor is used for work purposes.

My main monitor has the important stuff... openoffice, tools, keyword tools etc..

The left hand monitor has social networks, warrior forum, other research points..amazon and all affiliate logins for links etc..

The laptop to the right usually has some random sporting event and music playing

I find it is so much more focused when you can move the unimportant stuff away to the left and ignore it.. saves getting distracted and sucked into time killing things...

    Peace

My setup is very similar to Jays.

The main monitor has the main stuff I'm working on at the moment.
The left-hand monitor is for my email program and other stuff not being used constantly. If I'm using, for example, Dreamweaver on my main screen, I'll use the lefthand screen for previewing.
My laptop to the right is for music and I also use it as a print server.

You don't realise how useful it is until you have to go back to one screen for any reason.

    How to connect them technically???
My computer has 2 monitor sockets so I just plus one into each of them.

Then right-click on the Window desktop, go into the display settings and set up the 2 monitors.

I'll defer to others on the laptop issue.

I spent 10 minutes trying to get an external monitor working as a dual monitor on my laptop:

    Monitor #1 - Built-in LCD
Monitor #2 - External monitor plugged into the monitor port

I just couldn't get it to work with both at the same time.

I'm sure there's a way to do it but it wasn't my main setup so I couldn't be bothered fighting with it.

    Cheers,

OMG try 4 comps with names : Julius, Ceasar, Cleopatra and Maximus !!

Maximus - Instructional Video, email, and main browser. Yes this really helps with video editing, because on that comp I dont like anything else ope when I am doing that work.

Julius - (lap-top) than can do almost anything else but I use it in the back yard or while watching a hockey game upstairs.

Ceaser - Is older XP that I basically play poker on and record those games - it also has its own unique internet provider. (Need two - back-up - for whnever I make a final table)

Cleopatra - This is my new iMac and she is beautiful. I will be using this more for web video production from real camera footage. Also this is where I use the adobe products for banner and image creation. I recently created this logo in illustrator using my imac Blockhead Poker | Poker Videos of Online Donkeys and have also maderedsigned several pdf ebooks using pages 09 - fantastic program.

  • There's a small hardware that allows you to plug 2 or 3 external monitors to one laptop. It's called Matrox DualHead2Go and it works quite well.

I thought I was the only one who named my computers! I recently
went to a third monitor on the main box and my productivity jumped
again. My setup is much the same as P2Y. Don't do this unless you're
willing to be ruined. You'll most likely never go back to one monitor again.

Left monitor is where I keep all my work-related stuff. The right monitor is for browsing, researching and other miscellaneous items. How I wish I can have another monitor! But I have to fix my office workspace to accomodate that.

I have a few machines and laptops, but one of my main PCs is set up with 6 monitors (I've shared pictures here before) and I have the top 3 for forums, skype and twitter and the bottom 3 for email, current workspace and pc and external hard disk storage access.

I love having multiple monitors as when I'm editing some video in one window I can be running itunes in another and twittering and browsing the forum whenever the video editing is busy processing. I also sometimes watch tv and movies on one screen while I'm doing other stuff.

It's a little extravagent but I've got so used to it I'd struggle just using one now.

I actually have 2 setups - one has 2 video cards (1 that drives 4 monitors and one that drives 2), and another which is just a normal PC but has 5 USB to DVI converters (they were about $60 each) and they each feed a monitor.

There's another warrior who uses them too as we had this discussion at the end of last year.

I never thought of this before. Don't know why it never came up before.
I will definitely have to look into it.
    Thanks all.
