I have a network I want to develop that is basically information about cities throughout the US. I have about 10 topics per city I want to write specifically about, and I want to have a different website for each. With the same hosting account can I host all 10 topics per city, or would that give me some sort of penalty? I will be using the Mediatemple dedicated virtual package. Would it be better to have a different hosting account per topic? (so each city has 10 different hosting packages?) |

Do you mean you want ten websites per city, or a website per city with ten articles on each? Either way I don't see why your hosting company would care if you're allowed multiple domains on the one account.

if you can't host as many domains as you want on your account, change hosting companies.

I use hostgator ... best hosting company IMO. I have hundreds of sites hosted on one hosting acct for $14.99 per month. They have superior customer service also.

I can host unlimited domains on my hosting, but what I need is helpful backlinks from the other topics. Each city will have 10 topics, and if I have a different hosting account per topic then would that be beneficial for backlinks? Doesn't google punish backlinks from the same IP or something?

There shouldn't be a problem with hosting at all. You might want reseller hosting so each site is individual, but even that is up to you. Otherwise everything will be under the one main domain. Mary |

If it hasn't been clear, there are 10 domains per city. 10 separate websites. I am concerned with the value of the backlinks if I use the same hosting account for them all. How much value is there in having a separate website with back links to the other 9 domains? If they are on different hosting accounts will there be more power in the backlinks? Or would it be better to have a this format: www.city.com/topic1 www.city.com/topic2 www.city.com/topic3 versus www.topic1city.com www.topic2city.com www.topic3city.com |

You shouldn't be penalized by linking between your sites, but I don't think you'll get much benefit from it either. You're still going to have to build up your rank status with links from stronger sites. Buying all those domains at $10+ a pop is going to get expensive. You could just get one domain, then add subdomains to it. Subdomains normally cost no extra, you can have as many as you want and they function effectively as separate sites (something like: topic1.city.com).

If you really want to do all that work... you should be very careful to select the cities you target. Most City Portals are extremely well established and have advertising budgets, not to mention kill TLD's. And if you only live in one city, you have to kind of ask yourself were all that content is going to come from. You'll also be competing with local newspapers and television stations, plus radio. Sounds like a really tough project to me. But the issue is NOT one of HOSTING... it's one of deciding if you want to work from a single domain or several. CitySearch is the best example of a single domain covering a wide variety of cities. I think I would take more time to investigate your business plan ... specifically on how you are going to keep the content up-to-date and relevant. Any good reseller account will allow you to host the number of domains you require. And I use Host Gator, but not for much. There are better reseller options. There are plenty of flaws with Host Gator but I won't get into them. I'd give them a 6.5/10 Good luck with the project. |

If you are going to interlink the sites then having them on different C class IPs would give you the most benefit. Of course that costs a pretty penny compared to hosting all of the sites under one account.
